5.0 out of 5 stars THE QUEEN'S MASTERPIECE
THIS MIGHT BE THE BEST WORK YET FROM THE QUEEN OF SALSA CELIA CRUZ. ALL THE TRACKS ARE GREAT. THE QUEEN DEMONSTRATES WHY SHE HOLDS THE TITLE. IN THIS CD SHE GOES BACK TO HER ROOTS SINGING CUBAN AND PUERTO RICAN FOLK MUSIC. THE QUEEN ALSO PLAYS TRIBUTE TO THE LATE KING OF LATIN MUSIC TITO PUENTE IN THE OPENING TRACK 'CELIA'S OYE COMO VA'. THIS IS A GREAT CD. ALL SALSA FANS...

3.0 out of 5 stars "I Will Live Forever"
I admit it. I have never been a big fan of Celia Cruz. Her voice is like a car with one speed--full speed straight ahead. Her voice has the subtlety of a sledgehammer. This album is mostly pure salsa. It is good for dancing and parties. The band is tight and well-directed with a clear high-fidelity sound. The title comes from her remake of the old disco hit, "I...

The title comes from her remake of the old disco hit, "I Will Survive." I really didn't want to hear this song again. Celia gives the song new meaning, however, by telling us that she will live forever through her music. My favorite song of the album is "If By Chance I Don't Return (to Cuba)." This is a poignant, moving message. And at her age, it is a possibility. In more than one way she is telling us goodbye with this album. But she recently said in an interview, "May it be God who retires me." So, if her health holds up, we will have more recordings from Celia Cruz. The album notes provide the lyrics. Total playing time 51 minutes.

5.0 out of 5 stars ¡Celia nos trae más azúcar!, March 14, 2001
This review is from: Siempre Vivire (Audio CD)

5.0 out of 5 stars Celia Rules!!!, July 13, 2001
This review is from: Siempre Vivire (Audio CD)
I knew I would love Celia Cruz but I didn't know just how much. I really enjoyed the cover of Oye Como Va and the new lyrics to I Will Survive (the ONLY disco song I liked). Another of my favorites is La Medicina Cubana.

2.0 out of 5 stars Is it time to retire?, March 15, 2001

This review is from: Siempre Vivire (Audio CD)
A very disappointing album from the Queen of Salsa. I'm a huge Celia fan but couldn't help but feel unsatisfied with my purchase. It all starts off terribly wrong with Celia's tribute to the late great Tito Puente with "Celia's Oye Como Va". Tito must be rolling in his grave. I've never heard anything so tacky in my life. It will ruin "Oye Como Va" for you, please don't listen to it! How she could completely destroy one of the greatest songs of all time is beyond me. My understanding of Spanish is limited (though improving!) but some of the lyrics she adds are absolutely ridiculous. She has done sooooooo much better than this and you're reminded of it when she suddenly breaks out into a tongue-twisting phrase of "Oye-como-va-Oye-como-va, Quimbara Quimbara Quimba Quimbara Quimbara Quimba Quimbara Quimbara Quimba-Quim-bam-ba". Why Celia??? It is totally out of place and just reminds me of a time when you were great. The rest of the album doesn't get much better. She screams too much and sings too little. She even manages to frighten me in some songs.

"Por Si Acaso No Regresso" is one of the few inspired tracks--a wonderfully sensual Cha Cha (??? I'm not an expert in these numbers, so please correct me if I'm wrong.). It is the only song that saves this album from getting 1 star. It is very sexy and nice to dance to. The title track "Yo Vivire", a cover of the famous classic "I will survive", is pretty good but Celia doesn't know when to keep her mouth shut. She is(was?) a wonderful singer but it would have been nice if she would just let the music take over for a while. She yap yap yaps through the whole thing. Frankly, I kept wishing for Gloria Gaynor to take over. If someone could just overlay a salsa beat to her original it would be great...cause it's a great song to dance to.

If anyone else feels the same way about this album please speak up and write a review. I can't be alone here.
