Book Description

September 1999
Set in Kent and Italy, this is the moving story of the lives of sisters Poppy and Isobel. 1918: WWI has just ended and the young sisters both fall in love with Kit, an injured airman - Poppy with an adolescent love, and Isobel with an adult love. Poppy is devastated when Kit and Isobel elope - Isobel is pregnant and they go to Italy. Italy 1928: Isobel, after ten years of silence, suddenly writes to Poppy asking her to come and visit - she needs help. Isobel had miscarried her first child and things in Italy hadn't come up to her naive and romanticised expectations - they had no money...However, Kit and Isobel now have a son, Robbie, and she is pregnant again - but depressed and miserable. The presence of a French woman, Eloise, seems strange to Poppy and is clearly the crux of Isobel's problems. Poppy discovers that Eloise has a strange hold on Kit and is determined to damage everything he loves. Poppy, still in love with Kit in her way, decides to get to the bottom of things.

2.0 out of 5 stars The story is plain with very little excitement, October 10, 2001

This review is from: Siena Summer (Paperback)
After reading Siena Summer by Teresa Crane, I personally would not want read it the second time.

The story started with some flair of brilliance and uniqueness. Nonetheless, it did not convey enough plot to grab readers' attention especially during the middle section of the story. It was mostly plain storytelling with very little climax and excitement and the ending was largely expectable.

It was a reasonably good love story, but it could have used more and better metaphors to describe certain situations, which, I personally think, are an important part of a love story.

The story, though lethargic in some sense, had described an extract of the Italian culture vividly and it was an enjoyable experience to read about another culture with a plot.

If you are seeking a brilliant love story, this is not the one to purchase. However, if you are seeking experience of another culture, you have a good book right here.
