a disappointment,
By Mary Ann Daland (Somerville, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fun Day Fairies #6: Sienna the Saturday Fairy: A Rainbow Magic Book (Mass Market Paperback)
My daughter and I have been systematically reading the various Fairy books series by Daisy Meadows. Of the 20 or so books we've read, I've found them all moderately interesting, good books for beginning readers and with innocuous plots.
Sienna the Saturday Fairy, however, was a disappointing exception. The plot centers around a fashion show, which I felt was was too precocious for the age range of 8-10 year old girls. The story talks about the 'catwalk' and the 'show', and modeling clothes, etc. All too soon these young girls will be exposed to the hype around fashion, body image and the like. But to have something like this in a plot aimed toward girls of such a young age was inappropriate and offensive in my opinion. It is also very much counter to the themes of the other Fairy books. The other books have the girl protagonists doing interesting things, fighting the goblins, saving the fairies and the like. This one, however, really portrayed them as objects. My daughter grew bored. It was the only book so far of the various series that we haven't finished.

My 8 year old daughter loves all of the Rainbow Fairy books and this is no exception. Cute stories about fairies.
