Book Description

September 1, 2005 8 and up3 and up
Here it is, summer vacation, and Sienna's parents have already ruined it. They have this crazy idea that the family should stop off and visit black historical sites on their way to their North Carolina family reunion. As far as Sienna is concerned, summer is supposed to be about fun, not about learning! But Sienna is in for a wonderful surprise. Somehow along the way from the Amistad in New Haven, Connecticut, to the Apollo Theater in New York City, to the Great Blacks in Wax Museum in Baltimore, Maryland, to the Frederick Douglass House in Washington, D.C., Sienna discovers that learning can be an adventure.

Sienna's Scrapbook invites readers along on her family's vacationa trip filled with great places, great food, and great fun!

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6–A combination of scrapbook and journal, this refreshing retrospective of African-American history is engaging and entertaining. Sienna is skeptical at best when her parents announce that they will do a tour of black historical sites on their drive from Hartford, CT, to a family reunion in North Carolina. She feels strongly that summer is supposed to be about fun, not about learning! As they visit places such as the Amistad, the Apollo Theater, the homes of Louis Armstrong and Frederick Douglass, the National Air and Space Museum, the Great Blacks in Wax Museum, and the Woolworth's/civil rights museum (plus many more), Sienna includes humorous notes and personal comments, making this scrapbook seem authentic. Her voice is strong and real. The chosen sites are both significant and fascinating. Endnotes include addresses, phone numbers, Web sites, and additional places to visit. Engaging illustrations include childlike drawings and doodles, photos, paintings, and replicas of ticket stubs and other ephemera. Pages with journal entries appear to be written on yellow lined paper. This charming book would lend itself easily to classroom projects on black history, journal writing, or map study. It should also pique interest in visiting some of the sites described.–Mary Hazelton, Elementary Schools in Warren & Waldoboro, ME

"This book, from one of the founding mothers of contemporary black children's literature, is a lovely introduction to many of our historically relevant sites from the most well known to the more obscure. Colorful illustrations, photographs and journal notations make Sienna's Scrapbook a real treat and an excellent road trip companion for kids." Black Issues Book Review

5.0 out of 5 stars "The Lincoln and Jefferson memorials, the Washington Monument, the Capitol, the White House-wow!", February 12, 2006
This review is from: Sienna's Scrapbook (Hardcover)
Already planning a summer of fun with friends and cousins, Sienna is disappointed when her plans are foiled by a family trip that includes black historical sites on a drive from Winston-Salem to North Carolina. The first stop is in New Haven, CT, to view a replica of the slave ship "Amistad". In 1839, slaves on the Amistad rebelled and took over the ship. Sienna is stunned to learn that four of the slaves were children, a fact that helps her relate to the impossible conditions the slaves endured on the small ship. The history of the Amistad awakens Sienna's curiosity about the rest of the trip and all she can learn of her heritage.

In New York City, Sienna learns about the Harlem Renaissance and the writers who so influenced a burgeoning colony of artists, writers and musicians: Langston Hughes, Nora Zeale Hurston, Augusta Savage and Jacob Lawrence. The family also samples some of New York's specialty restaurants, Krispy Kremes and Sylvia's, visits the home of Louis Armstrong and even attends Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater. The following day, in Philadelphia, Sienna sees a doll museum with her mother where there are more than three-hundred black dolls, most made in Germany (as "exotic dolls"- the name given to dark-skinned dolls). From there the family goes to Germantown and learns about the Underground Railroad. And so it goes, each state yielding unexpected historical treasures that teach Sienna of a proud heritage as lived in the regions they pass through, the African American Museum in Philadelphia, the Lincoln Memorial, Howard University, the Emancipation Statue, a Quaker plantation where runaway slaves hid.

Richly illustrated with drawings and photographs, the text reveals a young girl's awe at discovering a country where her history is everywhere, peopled by heroes, artists, musicians and ordinary people. In a creative and visually enticing format, the author brings a natural enthusiasm to each place Sienna visits with her family, this memorable summer the inspiration for the next "heritage trip". Filled with imagination and an interest in everything around her, history takes on another dimension, brought alive by people and places that fill the pages of Sienna's diary. Sienna's Scrapbook is beautifully thought out and executed, rendered with a subtle appreciation for the spirit of struggle that defines American history. Luan Gaines/2006.

A really great easy to read book for children. I really like how it uses real places (like the National Great Blacks In Wax Museum) to encourage children to want to learn even more. The format as a "scrapbook" is unique and kept the information in shorter doses so as not to overwhelm children. Great Book!
