While the Antares offers almost all of same materials and components found in the award-winning Sierra Designs Reverse Combi and critically-acclaimed Meteor Light tents, this roomy design is sized to accommodate three adults instead of the typical two, so it doesn't fit the same couples demographic that some outdoor magazines focus on in best-of-the-year gear reviews. That's too bad because the Designs Antares Tent offers the kind of extra space that's usually associated with heavy camping tents but it has a weight profile that rivals some four-season two-person designs. This season Sierra Designs packaged the three-person Antares with a Footprint, coffee sling and portable gear attic as standard equipment, so the first time that you hit the trail, you're out there with all the tent accessories you'll need. The Antares saves weight and adds room through an award-winning design innovation called "Reverse Combi" technology. Sierra Designs accomplished this by configuring their lightweight DAC Featherlite NSL poles with a pre-bent construction that creates steep wall architecture with more headroom than conventional X-pole tent designs. The editors at Outdoor Magazine liked the extra headroom (as much as 50% more living space) so much that they gave the similarly-built, two-person Reverse Combi tent their 2005 Gear of the Year Award. What this all means is that you're likely to find more vertical space inside the Antares than in other three-person tents. Zippered doors on each side allow for easy exits and cross ventilation. Two covered vestibules give you a combined 24 square feet of storage space for climbing or fishing gear. The lighter, roomier features also make the Antares an excellent choice for small backpacking families who count on a little bit of elbow room and a mosquito-free play space.
