Sierra Leone (Bradt Travel Guide), March 17, 2010
This review is from: Sierra Leone (Bradt Travel Guide Sierra Leone) (Paperback)
Every place and address/phone number were correct. We met some Hungarians on Banana Is. & told then of our Bradt guide. They smiled & pulled out their own copy, agreeing on its usefulness! We took the cheaper option on the Island & were pleased with the choice. We had a pristine beach all to ourselves. I do hope SL gets its infrastructure (roads, electrification, water/sewer) upgraded. The counrty has much to offer. Too much is still potential. Bradt is a great guide.

This review is from: Sierra Leone (Bradt Travel Guide Sierra Leone) (Paperback)
Completely indispensable. Lots of valuable practial information that reaches far beyond Lonely Planet's and Rough Guide's West Africa guides. Great suggestions for hotels or restaurants you wouldn't look at without a hint from the Bradt guide. All you need to know about free camping on the beach. But: There's been a lot of change in-country since this edition went to press in 2009. Buy a local sim card and call any hotel, restaurant or shop you want to visit - the guide always provides at least one number. In around a third of all cases the establishment might have been closed or changed location. The background part has no less than 120 pages - quite a lot, I would have preferred even more _practical_ information instead. I feel that the war in the 90s gets even too many pages - as if the authors wanted to show off their research. The maps are rather bad; Lonely Planet does that much better. The tone is easy to read, professionally cool and entertaining. Style and content are somewhat better than Bradt's Ghana guide of the same year. The book disappointed me only in rare cases (for instance, they mention a taxi ride as an alternative to the usual boat trip from airport to town, but don't give any price).

This is pretty much THE travel guide for Sierra Leone, January 19, 2012
This review is from: Sierra Leone (Bradt Travel Guide Sierra Leone) (Paperback)
You aren't going to find many other travel guides devoted only to Sierra Leone (and not West Africa more generally). I think every single foreigner I met in Sierra Leone used this guide like a bible. Frankly, there aren't many tourist attractions in Sierra Leone, but the guide does a good job of explaining how to get around, as well as some cool facts and places to visit that even the locals won't think to mention. The guide probably could've done a better job explaining different kinds of street food and parts of it seemed geared at terrifying rather than reassuring travelers, but those are tiny complaints. From my experience, most of the phone numbers, addresses, and even prices for food, travel and lodging were relatively current. The maps of Freetown and outlying cities proved invaluable, since I hadn't bothered to buy a separate map. There are a lot of decent guest houses, internet cafes and restaurants not listed in the book, but the guide provides a great starting point.
