Great reception, but not for your home network, March 23, 2008
This review is from: Sierra Wireless AC595U EVDO USB Modem (Sprint) (Wireless Phone)
I use this card in a fairly remote area of northern Idaho, with an unpowered external antenna (the small Wilson one) on Verizon's service. It works well, although not with 100% consistency (e.g., I just now got 139 kpbs down and 260 kbps up using Speakeasy's speed test, but normally the download number is significantly higher, but I can't tell if this variance is from Verizon or the card ... I'd guess Verizon.)
Despite what I consider excellent performance in a sub-standard service area, I dinged the rating from 5 stars for three reasons:
1.) The device itself is so flimsy and sticks out so far you really have to use it with the included cradle and extension cord, which is a pain to carry around and use compared to a PCMCIA card which you can plug in and forget about. But if you're already carrying around an external antenna, carrying the cradle's not really all that big of a deal, and this card is reputed to have more power than most PCMCIA cards and hence better performance when far from civilization. The cradle does allow you to move a few more feet from the external antenna if you're using one, which can be handy.
2.) There is no cheap solution for using this for a home network. There are only three options. First, you can buy a WiFi only box for $140 or so (CradlePoint makes two versions compatible with this card, but the one with Ethernet is uplink only.) Second, you can pony up $300 or more for a Top Global MB6800 router with 4 Ethernet points. Finally, you can dedicate a spare PC and use Internet Connection Sharing (at least on Windows.) None of them are great solutions, unless you have a fully WiFi network at home, in which case the CradlePoint solution should be fine.
3.) The modem requires a powered hub to recharge its internal battery ... not an issue if your laptop has enough USB connectors, but a problem otherwise, since it's yet another thing to carry around and find power for.
All in all, I'm happy with the performance but not happy that I can't use this for my existing home network without shelling out a lot more money to replace routers I already have that work fine.
Update May, 2008:
I purchased the Cradlepoint CTR-350 router. This router indeed works well with the modem and with my laptop and took all of a few minutes to set up with WPA security turned on. I'll post a review of the router after I have a bit more experience with the router (meaning I've made it work with my Wii or have given up trying!)

Sprint said this product has reached END OF LIFE, 3 yrs later, July 25, 2011

You might want to watch what you sign up for. I signed up for a Sprint695U aircard. It used to work great at the lake because my only alternative for BB is a Wifi service that originates out of Culpepper, Va some 60 Miles away. The sprint #G connection worked Great as a USB Modem for the first six months of ownership in 2005.
Then Sprint Changed the service at their Cell Towers.. They made me the recipient of WIFI service at the link level so you could no longer run a router off your connection. Was using a Cradlepoint MBR1000 router with just 2 computers hooked up. Now my Laptop can see my network but as soon as it logs on the signal drops. Sprint intentionally disabled us in the sticks so that 3G Cell phones off I-95 would have greater priority then residential users of the #G network!
As I was one of the early adopters I have an UNLIMITED Data account for 59.99. One small problem.. You CANNOT get UNLIMITED DATA over the Sprint NETWORK anymore .. once you cross 7GB they throttle you.
On the SW595U card they can send out a Spike that will put a red light on your SW595U modem. I found this out after many folks complaining of the RED light saying the battery wasn't charged up.. that is BULL I am using 'new batteries'. When the Red light comes on my SW595U I run ( a cache software cleanup program ) & when it cleans my data cache the RED slight problem mysteriously goes away. This tells me that Sprint is sending some type of software message that kills off legacy users.... Especially those with Unlimited Data accounts usually happening during prime time too. If they bump us off the network, then they can give all those the sold 5GB accounts limited more bandwidth.
As Of March 2008 Sprint Discontinued Support & Updates for the Aircard 3 years after it was released. You cannot transfer your ESN # to a new aircard, you can only use the aircard you have & you are locked in to its failure on their networks if it dies.
Won't ever believe an unlimited lifetime contract again.. these Telephone companies will switch you out so that they have recurring profits & repeat business no matter what you are stuck with. In my area Cable stops 1.5 Miles from my house + a satellite connection will not connect me to a VPN or secure Site at any speed greater then 250kps.Neither Hughes now Wildblue will suffice.. been there done that. If I could get digital Cable or FIOS I would but the telephone companies are cherry picking who they want as customers and if you live in a development where everyone has 5 acres or more land, 9 times out of 10 you won't be the AREA THAT IS SERVED. The phone companies would rather serve the trailer parks in your area.,,,more density..
