Love is Cooking,
By A Customer
This review is from: Siete Modos De Guisar Las Bere (Audio CD)
Heard only excerpts on NPR's Weekend "All Things Considered" and immediately fell in love with the music and lyrics. It is sensual and exciting and I am looking very much forward to hear the entire CD. I am a fan of latin music. The theme of this CD reminded me about the movie "Like Water for Chocolate".

Eggplant and Love-What a combination,

This review is from: Siete Modos De Guisar Las Bere (Audio CD)
Maria has a voice that won't quit. It's the kind of voice that would makes the sirens jealous! The songs are sung in an older Castillian dialect. The content is unusual and gives a refreshing outlook on typical love songs. You won't believe your ears.

Stunning to Nice,

While Maria Salgado has been around quite a while in Spanish music, her voice has been relatively unknown in North America except for the occasional afficionado (or Spaniard). She has varied from poppy, ballad-oriented work to much more folksy approaches such as the tracks in this latest work. With all of critical acclaim that norteamericanos have heaped on "Siete Modos" and a new interest in all things 'world', I am sure her voice will become more common--and this is an excellent introduction to it. Most tracks on the CD are extremely strong, and only occasionally a little over-produced (for a contemporary folk album), but overall, a wonderful addition to any musical library. If you find Maria to be worth your time, then check out work by her occasional collaborator and in this case, producer, Luis Delgado, who has also worked in Spanish-Andalusian Medieval music with some equally enchanting results.

Don't Let the Title Fool You!,
This review is from: Siete Modos De Guisar Las Bere (Audio CD)
...even if it's in English ("Seven Ways to Cook Eggplant"). It's a collection of Srta Salgado's Castillano heritage - rich in tradition and surprisingly "diverse". Spanish/Sephardic/ Scottish/Jewish - it's all there, complete with bazuki and bagpipes. Mostly love songs in her melodious voice, you'd don't have to "habla Español" to get the message. A truly unusual and hauntingly pleasant interlude of entertainment!

The Real Thing,

If you are looking for Latin Crossover music designed for the US market, forget this one. Salgado is nothing like Pop stars Aguilera and Lopez, or even her countryman Iglesias. Here you will hear the clear voice of a native of Castile, Spain. A Castilian who unashamedly values and perpetuates Castilian history and Castilian traditional music. Beautiful!
