5.0 out of 5 stars "Sif Safaa" is one of the best Middle Eastern cd's around-, November 7, 1999

Even though I don't understand a word they are singing, this music is very inspirational to me. I am constantly trying to find other cd's that will live up to the same standard as "Sif Safaa"- only one other cd has- "Yalla.. Hitlist Egypt" comes very close.

The CD features a collection of modern Egyptian songs, a song from Iraq and a song from from Saudi Arabia.
The rhythms are mostly exciting, and the singers ALL posess great mellow voices.
My favorite song is by Abu Hilal from Saudia. He is just a deep singer and his musicians are wonderful. Saleh Khairy, Mohamed Mounir, Mohamed Fouad, Hamdi Ahmad and hanan also contribute to this very good CD.
I am not an expert on Arab music, so I can't say how this CD compares with others of this genre. I can say that it brings me pleasure and it certainly is excellent pop music.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Hip Arabic Pop Music, June 19, 2008
By
This review is from: Sif Safaa: New Music From Middle East (Audio CD)
Another one of Hemisphere's world music CDs, this particular compilation is another foray into the fun, catchy world of Arabic pop music. While not quite as expansive as their other release, 'Camelspotting', this CD nonetheless includes some great tracks. Kazim al-Saher, Iraq's 'weapon of mass seduction,' is here, along with Mohamed Fouad, Nubian singer Mohamed Mounir (who's song is in fact the title of this album), khaleeji star Khairy Saleh, 'oud player/singer Abu Hilal, and a couple of song's by Egyptian pop diva Hanan (in her typical high pitched voice). Not really a complete survey of Arabic/Middle Eastern pop music, but more like a random sampler. It's still a fun excursion into the contemporary music scene of the Arab world. Hemisphere has a couple of other Arabic compilations out there, including albums of Fairouz, Warda and such. If your going to get this CD, I recommend buying it in conjunction with their other release, 'Camelspotting.' The two CDs complement each other nicely, with 'Camelspotting' giving a more wide-ranging survey of the Arabic music scene. Either way, two CDs full of Arabic pop music are well worth the buy if you ask me. Definately worth checking out, especially if you've never been the Middle East or don't know anything on Arab music.
