Editorial Reviews

Since releasing his debut CD in 2004, Matt Schofield is developing a fast growing following of admirers stretching from the USA to the Far East. Many Blues fans in the UK and Europe will already know Matt from his work with Lee Sankey, Dana Gillespie and The Lester Butler Tribute Band. He is being talked of by those in the know as "the finest Blues-inspired guitarist to have emerged in Britain for several generations." Now with this first studio album Matt shows his colors as a fine songwriter as well as one of the most gifted guitarists on the contemporary Blues scene. Using the same band line up that performs so powerfully on the live CD, (Jonny Henderson on organ and Evan Jenkins on Drums), Siftin' Thru Ashes has eight original numbers together with stunning re-interpretations of some classics including The Boxtops' The Letter (also popularized by Joe Cocker). Blueblood. 2005.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shining guitar playing, August 6, 2007
By

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Siftin Thru Ashes (Audio CD)
Matt Schofield is without any doubts a very good guitar player. It is truth, he wasn't borne on the Delta or in Chicago, he was borne in Manchester, UK, however he plays the blues marvellously well with a very distinctive style, feeling and passion. He is considered one of the best British guitarists of all time and I agree with such statement. In particular this album is more blues than the new offer Ear To The Ground (still very good) and should please also every one who do not like their blues too much mixed with jazz sound. Schofield guitar work shines throughout the entire album and he proves to be a good singer too. As usual there is no bass player and the bass lines are played by Jonny Henderson with his B3. Highlights are the opening "All you need", the superb cover of the Albert Collins' classic "Lights are on, but nobody's home", the mid tempo "Back to square one" and the closing "Hard lines", however there are no bad songs to be spotted in this CD. In conclusion a very good effort that surely deserves attention and consideration.

4.0 out of 5 stars Siftin' Thru Ashes a terrific recording from MATT SCHOFIELD,My review from Barcelona, January 4, 2008
This review is from: Siftin Thru Ashes (Audio CD)
Terrific `Matt Scofield's' record this `Siftin' Thru Ashes' that in spite of playing the Blues very well is English from Manchester bsesides he plays the guitar in excellent way with a very distinctive style. He is considered one of the best British guitarists of all time and I agree with such statement. This album is practically all Blues and is very accomplished. The programme is blues mostly original but including an independent-minded reading of Albert Collin's "Lights Are On , But Nobody's Home" a terrific version of "People Say", a 60's classic from `Box Tops' "The Letter" frankly very good and organ-guitar jazz jamming in fine 60's Blue Note style. Though done in a studio it has almost all the presence of a live recording. In a short words a very good record that deserves to be listen at least. I give it 4 stars.
