In "Sight Unseen" the Neighborhood Club, a group of six friends, decide to hold a séance for fun- only to have a blood-curdling crime reenacted before their eyes. About the Author

Mary Roberts Rinehart is a well-known mystery and romance writer. Her memorable tales often combine adventure, love, ingenuity, and humor in a style that is distinctly her own. She creates fast-paced, entertaining, and above all, surprising novels. Most of her fiction eventually erupts into the most startling plot twists imaginable. To this Mary adds a strong dose of realism in the depiction of modern life, with many different classes, corruption high and low, and a great diversity of characters. Mary's stories have appeared in the Saturday Evening Post, and she is also a published playwright.

The Essential Rinehart Collection brings together for the first time the best works of Mary Roberts Rinehart. This multi-volume series features her most interesting novels of mystery, romance, and adventure.

5.0 out of 5 stars if you like vintage mysteries laced with the supernatural...., November 17, 2006

This review is from: Sight Unseen/the Confession (Paperback)
...then this is a great book! It is actually two short novels in one binding, and would serve as an excellent starting point for anyone who has never read a Mary Roberts Rinehart mystery.

Her writing style is excellent and timeless. Mysteries and character are central to both novels; supernatural aspects are very subtle and therefore all the more believable. "The Confession" is a wonderful look at the psychology of fear. "Sight Unseen" starts with a seance (a pass-time that was all the rage when this book was written) the unexpected results of which lead to a murder inquiry.

To say anything more about either story would reveal too much. If you like a vintage British "country house" kind of mystery, the type Agatha Christie did so well, then here you will enjoy the American equivalent. Mary Roberts Rinehart was very prolific and wrote many types of books. But it is her mysteries that have endured the test of time...and this volume is a great starting point.

Also highly recommended from this author: The Red Lamp, The Album, The Case of Jennie Bryce.
