Product Description

The Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM is the practical zoom! A large-aperture, standard zoom lens for digital cameras with an open-aperture value of F2.8 (at 17mm) and covers the most frequently used focal lengths. With an aperture fast enough to be used in many light situations, its close focusing for use with very small object and its outstanding optical performance make this an ideal all-around lens for landscapes, portraits, still life studies, group shots and just about any everyday photo situation. The OS, Sigmas anti shake feature, offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible. The OS feature allows Sony and Pentax users the option of viewing a stabilized image in the viewfinder, a feature offered only by Sigma. HSM ensures quiet and high speed AF capability. With a faster aperture than the typical camera "kit lens" it is an excellent choice for the photographer who has higher expectations for their photo equipment.

I confirm Sigma did dropped OS from Sony version of this lens. Besides that there is no clear indication on their web site that AF does not work properly with a65/a77 cameras.

Please don't buy from Abes of Maine - huge hassle to return an obviously defective, misrepresented (no OS) and incompatible product, filed Amazon A-Z claim.

I purchased this lens because it offered Optical Stabilization when used on the Sony mount. Sigma apparently has recently decided to drop that feature without notice. At the time of this review their website still shows that the Sony mount version of this lens has the OS feature.

I wanted to replace my kit lens and the candidates came down to either this lens or the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8. I chose the Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8 OS HSM for one reason, despite the higher aperture it had optical image stabilization. I plan on using this lens for video and the OS was the feature that sold me on the Sigma lens. I ordered the OS version, Amazon advertised it, Adorama advertised it on their website however I received the NON-OS version. Had I know that I would be lacking OS I would have purchased the cheaper and optically superior Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8.

Due to the misrepresentation of the lens I have no choice but to rate this as low as possible. It's key feature is completely missing.

Have not had a chance to really put it thru a total test but, so far all seems well.

I have the non-OS version of this lens in the Sony alpha mount. I thought that it was reasonably sharp until I got a Sony 17-250 zoom. The Sony is only considered to be reasonably sharp (not a great lens, but a good one considering its price point). Well... the Sigma isn't even as sharp as the Sony! So then I decided to take a look at the Sony "kit" 17-55 zoom that came with my new Alpha 580 (LOVE this camera) and it is also SHARPER than the Sigma. So... getting rid of the Sigma 17-70 ASAP.
