Product Description

Manufacturer Description

The Sigma 28-300mm f3.5-6.3 Macro lens covers all the focal lengths from 28mm wide angle to 300mm telephoto with 10.7:1 high zoom ratio as well as macro capability. The 28-300mm f3.5-6.3 Macro packs a lot of performance in a compact package with ultra compact dimensions that make this lens the ultimate traveling companion length.

Two-piece Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass elements and four-piece aspherical lenses, produce a high level of optical performance.
The 28-300mm f3.5-6.3 Macro lens feature two-piece Special Low Dispersion SLD glass elements and four-piece aspherical lenses, to produce a high level of optical performance. Aspherical lenses provide excellent correction for all types of aberration while making a very compact construction possible.

Macro photography with a 1:3 maximum photography ratio
The 28-300mm f3.5-6.3 Macro lens has a minimum focusing distance of 19.7 inches (50 centimeters) at all focal lengths and is equipped with a macro mechanism for close-up photography at 300-millimeter telephoto, with a reproduction ratio of 1:3.

Inner Focus System
This design allows for stability and compactness in design as changes in focus are made in an internal lens grouping. This also gives the advantage of a non rotating front lens assembly which is of great benefit when using polarizing filter and Petal-type hood.

The "Zoom Lock" device prevents the zoom setting from being changed inadvertently.
The 28-300mm f3.5-6.3 Macro lens is equipped with a zoom lock to prevent the lens from creeping due to its own weight, and to offer protection whilst the lens is being carried.

DG Lens
These are large-aperture lenses with wide angles and short minimum focusing distances. With an abundance of peripheral illumination, they are ideal lenses for digital SLR cameras whilst retaining suitability for traditional 35mm SLRs.

Product Description

This digitally optimized zoom lens provides a high zoom magnification of 10.7x. The new lens coating reduces flare and ghosting, a common problem with digital cameras and also creates an optimum color balance. The 10.7x zoom ratio covers a wide range of focal length from wide angle to tele-photo making this a highly versatile lens ideally suited for many types of photography. This lens features two Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass elements and four Aspherical Lenses, to produce a high level of optical performance. Aspherical lenses provide excellent correction for all types of aberration while making a very compact construction possible. The 28-300mm F3.5-6.3 DG MACRO lens has a minimum focusing distance of 50cm at all focal lengths and is equipped with a macro mechanism for close-up photography at 300mm telephoto, allowing a reproduction ratio of 1:3. The zoom lock switch eliminates "zoom creep" during transportation, a convenient addition when traveling. The inner focusing system gives the advantage of a non-rotating front lens assembly, which is of great benefit when using polarizing filter and the matched Petal-shaped lens hood supplied.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good for this price, June 30, 2008
This review is from: Sigma 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DG IF Macro Aspherical Lens for Minolta and Sony SLR Cameras (Electronics)
I got this lens, it very appealing to have 28-300 as I do not have to change any lens that often. It's great, the picture is very good. The zoom is amazing. The picture quality and the colors are very good. There is little stiffness when zooming but I think it will go away with use. I feel like the auto focus is a bit slow to get the right focus. But I haven't tried lens with that zoom power to really compare. I still use my 18-70 lens to capture people and wide range pictures. Finally, it's really great for this price.

I use this on on my Sony a300 as my default lens, and it's head and shoulders above the kit lenses that come with the camera; it seem much more solidly built, and the photos are sharper. I've taken literally thousands of photos with this lens. I personally have not had any of the autofocus issues reported by others. My one minor complaint is that the zoom lock button really doesn't work all that well; the weight of the lens itself seems to disengage the lock, so it tends to extend itself when you're carrying the camera with the power off. And it sticks out there a ways too: fully extended with lens hood you're talking about 8 inches. I suppose the flip side of this is that if you turn the camera on with the lock engaged (as I've done), you won't damage any internal parts when the lens starts moving. If this issue was somehow solved, I'd give this lens a solid 5 stars. One other geeky point: this lens does not provide ADI flash info to my Sony DSLR, so the camera defaults to TTL flash metering, but I was aware of this before purchase. A lens that does provide this info would cost more than I'm willing to pay at this point.

Nice all purpose lense. Has some auto-focusing issues at the high and low end though.
