5.0 out of 5 stars review; 62mm filters, June 12, 2007
This review is from: Sigma 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DG Macro Lens for Sony Alpha A100K A100 Digital SLR (Electronics)
This lens takes 62mm filters.

I don't know why the listings never tell that... You need to know that if you're buying a UV filter, polarizing filter, or whatever.

For the product itself, this is a great all-in-one lens, especially for the price. Yeah, professionals will want higher-quality, more specialized, and much more expensive lenses, but for beginners and amateurs (like me), this is great.

I considered getting two lenses that, together, would cover the same range, but this was actually cheaper. After using it for over a year, I've been very happy with it overall. I also discovered another reason to use an all-in-one lens: I don't mind carrying extra weight, but I decided I would really hate to have to switch lenses in a windy, dusty environment -- pretty much any outdoors shots. You don't want that stuff mucking up your sensor.

You might consider the kit Amazon has that includes this lens and filters and other stuff. Looks like a good deal to me; I would've gotten that if it had been an option when I bought mine. You want some filter on the end so when it gets scratched, you replace a $20-30 filter instead of a $250 lens. But if you don't get the kit... as I said above, it takes 62mm filters.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great in day but not in Night, August 14, 2007

This review is from: Sigma 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DG Macro Lens for Sony Alpha A100K A100 Digital SLR (Electronics)
For photography in bright conditions this lens is unmatched for it's price. However, in low light conditions it tends to be a little slow and the AF will seek quite a bit. If you do not plan on low light shoots and take photos in bright (even cloudy conditions it performs well) and/or studio shots this lens is perfect. One other thing to note is that when using a teleconverter, manually focusing will be very rough and weighted (it will give you a good bit of resistance as opposed to smooth operation).

For the price this lens works fine. It is a bit slow in focussing and the barrel distortion at the widest setting is noticeable. However, given the price these are acceptable.
The macro performance is very good.
