4.0 out of 5 stars Great value for the money, January 18, 2008
Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8-4 DG Aspherical Large Aperture Zoom Lens for Nikon SLR Cameras

I was looking for a zoom lens for indoor sports shots. I didn't want to pay the big bucks of $750 to $1500. The Sigma fit the bill. At 2.8 it gives enough light for a decent shutter speed. The quality appears good as well. Although I have not blown pictures to 20x24, I can not tell the difference compared to expensive lens I have rented costing ten or fifteen times more. It also works well for indoor and flash photos. For my money, it does what I need.

4.0 out of 5 stars good lens, but focus can be better, February 10, 2009
By C. Suyat (CA, USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
i first bought this lens because of the price and the minimum aperture of f2.8

ive read the reviews before hand, and they basicly all hold up. the lens is louder than my old canon EF lens, but that doesnt bother me and shouldnt be the main concern.

my only gripe is the focusing. my 20D has a small screen so im not really able to tell what in focus or not. after i took a couple of pics and looked at them on computer, they came out a little blurry. even with alot of light and a fast shutter. i then started to try other things to see whats up. i found that using a tripod made all the difference. other than the focusing, this lens is good for the price. nice aperture, sharp, compact,

update:

after knowing more about photography, it is no surprise that at f/2.8 it is not the sharpest. great DOF but like others said the focus is soft/ off

after doing some test. (on a tripod with manual setting to keep exposure constant, autofocus on, canon 20D) i found that at 28mm, around f/9 is the sharpest. at 70mm f/13. hoepfully this will help out some people.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value for the price! Sharp lens!, May 16, 2009
I am a Semi-Professional Photographer and this lens is great for the price. It takes sharp images, good color and contrast. I have had no issue with the auto focus on this lens contrary to other reviews, maybe I got a good copy. It is also very fast! Works fine in low light conditions in or outdoor. Good walk around lens for the money, I own several Sigma lenses because I know a good deal when I see one. It is sturdy enough if you are not too hard on it and besides you should not ever drop your lens or your camera! Canon makes great lenses but they don't have great prices and I am sure you all agree with that. Great for beginners and someone who needs a descent lens for the price. It is as sharp as a nifty fifty at 50mm. I recommend you buy this lens.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent lens as long as you are ok with manual focus.....
This is a decent lens with a very cheap build. The auto focus is horrible on this lens. It is not a problem for me but for someone who can't use manual focus it could be a HUGE... Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for.
I received this lens as part of a package on eBay, along with a Canon XTi. On paper it looked to be better than the Canon kit lens. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it!
This is the first of 2 Sigma lenses that I have bought. They're extremely sturdy and well built. I probably won't buy any other brand now considering the value of the product.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great in Low Light! Cheap and produces soft image
First of all you can't expect this lens to be great. It is cheap and it's build cheap. However the best way to use this lens is in manual mode because you will have to set it at a... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome lens that works as well as a $1000 version
I am an amature photographer, not professional. This lens works great and I am very happy with how it enables me to blur backgrounds.
