Amazon.com Product Description

Optimized for Canon digital SLR cameras, the Sigma 300m telephoto lens is a terrific choice for long-distance photography. The Sigma lens relies on two extra-low-dispersion (ELD) glass elements, which combine to reduce chromatic aberration and create sharp, high-contrast images. The multilayer lens coating, meanwhile, reduces internal reflection and minimizes flare and ghosting to further improve image clarity. Finally, the lens includes a built-in Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) for quick and silent autofocusing, with a full-time manual override for people who prefer more autonomy. The 300mm lens--which is compatible with APO teleconverters (sold separately) for conversion to a 420mm or 600mm lens--also offers a drop-in 46mm filter holder in the rear part of the lens barrel. All Sigma lenses carry a one-year warranty.

Product Description

This lens is a fast f/2.8 maximum aperture telephoto optimized for digital SLR cameras. The multi layer lens coating reduces flare and ghosting, which is a common problem with digital SLR cameras. ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion) glass elements reduce chromatic aberration to a minimum and also ensure sharp, quality images of high contrast. It creates an excellent image quality for both 35mm film and digital SLR cameras. A 46mm drop-in filter holder in the rear part of the lens barrel facilitates the use of different filters, including a polarizing filter. The HSM models (Sigma, Nikon and Canon mounts) provide fast, silent AF function as well as full- time manual focus override. It incorporates an inner focusing system, which enables the overall length of the lens to stay the same while focusing, ensuring convenient handling and ease of use. By simply adding an optional APO teleconverter (sold separately), this lens can be used as a 420mm F4 AF ultra-telephoto lens with a 1.4X EX teleconverter, or a 600mm F5.6 AF ultra-telephoto lens with a 2X teleconverter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great lens for Price, November 22, 2008

The Sigma 300 F2.8 lens for Sony/Minolta is a great lens for the price. I could not afford The Sony/Minolta equivalent as it was over twice the price. The color, contrast and resolution of this lens is excellent and works great with 1.4 and 2.0 Sigma teleconverters. It also works great with the in-camera image stabilization on the Sony DSLR cameras.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good alternative, February 23, 2010

I wanted more reach for wildlife photography wanted so I settled on the this lens for use with my Nikon D90. I find it to be sharp even with the 2X teleconverter. I use it with a monopod mostly except for birds in flight. It is heavy and the only monopod head I could find to handle it is the one from Really Right Stuff. The build quality looks to be excellent. If they ever made a stabilized version, which they will one day, the big boys will be hurtin'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Lens, but no HSM for Sony version, April 29, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased this lens after renting the Sony G 300 f2.8. Only after reading the reviews of this lens and owning other Sigma EX lenses that I have been very happy using. I noticed that the autofocus was pretty noisy and a bit slower than the Sony lens. The images this Sigma lens produce are great and nice smooth Bokeh. It works great with the 1.4x and 2.0x Sigma EX teleconverter, but I had problems with the A900 with aperture priority, with the teleconverters mounted, the camera didn't remove the lower f stops like when I had the Sony lens mounted...with the Sony 1.4x teleconverter on the camera with the Sony lens, I was only able to open up to f/4. With the Sigma EX Teleconverters in use, I could select f2.8 and wasn't sure if it defaulted to the appropriate next available f stop for the situation, so if I had the 1.4x teleconverter in use and the camera set to f2.8 would it meter for f4? I know this is minor detail, but worth mentioning.

As a wildlife photographer the noise created by the autofocus was too much and I had to return it. I just purchased the Sony lens and 1.4x teleconverter since it has the SSM. If it weren't for those factors I would have kept the lens and enjoyed using it.
