This review is from: Sigma 300mm f/2.8 EX DG IF APO Telephoto Lens for Minolta and Sony SLR Cameras (Electronics)
The Sigma 300 F2.8 lens for Sony/Minolta is a great lens for the price. I could not afford The Sony/Minolta equivalent as it was over twice the price. The color, contrast and resolution of this lens is excellent and works great with 1.4 and 2.0 Sigma teleconverters. It also works great with the in-camera image stabilization on the Sony DSLR cameras.

I wanted more reach for wildlife photography wanted so I settled on the this lens for use with my Nikon D90. I find it to be sharp even with the 2X teleconverter. I use it with a monopod mostly except for birds in flight. It is heavy and the only monopod head I could find to handle it is the one from Really Right Stuff. The build quality looks to be excellent. If they ever made a stabilized version, which they will one day, the big boys will be hurtin'.

I purchased this lens after renting the Sony G 300 f2.8. Only after reading the reviews of this lens and owning other Sigma EX lenses that I have been very happy using. I noticed that the autofocus was pretty noisy and a bit slower than the Sony lens. The images this Sigma lens produce are great and nice smooth Bokeh. It works great with the 1.4x and 2.0x Sigma EX teleconverter, but I had problems with the A900 with aperture priority, with the teleconverters mounted, the camera didn't remove the lower f stops like when I had the Sony lens mounted...with the Sony 1.4x teleconverter on the camera with the Sony lens, I was only able to open up to f/4. With the Sigma EX Teleconverters in use, I could select f2.8 and wasn't sure if it defaulted to the appropriate next available f stop for the situation, so if I had the 1.4x teleconverter in use and the camera set to f2.8 would it meter for f4? I know this is minor detail, but worth mentioning.
As a wildlife photographer the noise created by the autofocus was too much and I had to return it. I just purchased the Sony lens and 1.4x teleconverter since it has the SSM. If it weren't for those factors I would have kept the lens and enjoyed using it.

I could not afford Nikon's VR 300mm lens so I picked this one up instead. I've routinely shot with Sigma's 1.4x Teleconverter and 2.0x TC attached and have gotten brilliant results. The lens is more than sharp enough wide open, even with the 2x TC on it. I often photograph birds and there is plenty of detail in the photos. This lens is simply brilliant.

The lens is one of the few telephotos for Pentax. It is a beautiful "big" lens that is great for wildlife.

I have bought a copy of this lens for a pentax k-20 and k-7. It is the worst lens i have in my collection. The international warrenty is completly useless. Do not travel and buy this lens. I have had it for three months and it is a good paper weight. I have tried to get international warrenty on the lens and no one in asia services the lens or does not have the equipment to work on it. The autofocus is so far out it is worthless. Sigma says send it in with camera at my own expense. What a rip off. The IQ is very poor for a lens like this.
I suggest buying a paper weight for 5 dollars. And not a 3000 dollar one. |
