Yes, the Sigma has better edge sharpness at wider apertures than the Canon, as I have owned both of them. I ultimately stayed with the Sigma due to the use of an aspherical element (large aperture edge sharpness), 9-blade iris for smooth bokeh and a very fast HSM focusing motor. Only drawbacks to this lens are weight and filter size (77mm).
