I upgraded to this bike computer from the very good Sigma 8.12 just to get a backlight for my early morning rides before the sun is up. Other people have talked about the functionality so I am going to review the unit as it pertains to my decision to purchase it... the backlight. First, a couple of things...
1. The display on the 16.12 is bigger than the one on the 8.12
2. The 16.12 can use the same mount as the 8.12
3. There are 4 buttons on the 16.12 versus 1 on the 8.12
4. The cadence hardware is in the box, but optional (i am not using cadence currently)
5. Even without cadence installed you still have to cycle through cadence options
6. If you want to use cadence you need to use the mount included with the 16.12

So, as I said before I got this for the backlight... HOWEVER, I have some serious issues with the backlight function. First, you have to activate the backlight at the start of every ride because when the Sigma goes into sleep mode it resets this function to off. Second, the backlight does not stay illuminated for the entire ride, you have to press one of the buttons on the top or bottom of the unit to activate the backlight. Third, the backlight stays on for 5 seconds after the last button press and then shuts off. I could understand if these were the default settings, but as far as I can tell these are the only settings for the backlight. These issues makes the backlight nearly impossible to use and almost identical to the backlight-less 8.12 I was replacing.

The major problem comes from having to press a button to activate the light.

I was looking at reviews for bike computers and the Sigma 1609 seemed to be the standout for price/quality, so I checked out their website and saw this newer version and checked it out. For the 40.49 I paid, it was a great buy.

The package comes with everything you need, as well as 12 twist ties, and INCLUDES ALL NECESSARY WIRING FOR CADENCE, despite other sites selling this model stating "Cadence: No" or "Cadence: Optional". Cadence is not included in the 16.12 STS model for some reason, but is included in the 16.12 or the 16.12 STS CAD. This can be confirmed on the features chart on Sigma's website.

The wiring for speed/distance is long enough, however the cadence wiring is SHORT. I have a large bike but am not that tall (5'10"), and the wiring barely made it even with me taking the direct, less "neat" route and left very little slack up top for tiny movement of the computer. I tested it for the first ride, worked great, yet the tight wiring caused the wire cover to come apart near the top. Some electric tape covered the exposed wire and it still works great, but Sigma clearly did not put enough thought into the length for anything larger than a medium-sized bike.

The initial set-up is easy, the only thing that stumped me for a second was the wheel size programming, but I found this handy wheel size chart on Sigma Sport's website: [...] ... use this instead of what comes in the package (at the bottom of the fold-out programming guide), as inaccurate wheel sizes complained about by bikers prompted an update by Sigma. Wheel sizes were off by approximately 2%, which may not seem like much, but can be significant.

So far so good, none of the aforementioned issues warrants knocking off a star.

I bought this to replace a CatEye Mity 8 that flew off into the undergrowth when I was switching water bottles, never to be seen again.

Installation of the Sigma was fairly straightforward, but what bike computer isn't? I ended up using 3M protective film to attach the cadence cable--I wasn't too keen on having half-a-dozen zip-ties on my bottom tube. Nor was I impressed with how Sigma uses a combination of double-sided tape and zip-ties (or rubber bands) to hold the computer mount in place--I'm sure it'll hold just fine, but if you don't get the angle of the computer right the first time, too bad. A more common plastic mount with rubber shims would have been preferred. The mounting system itself--turn the computer 1/4 turn to dislodge--seems much more secure than CatEye's, though, so...

Riding with the computer for the first time, I was impressed with the size of the display. The numbers are very large, and very easy to read. I haven't used the backlight yet, but I'd imagine that, too, will be very handy. One of my REQUIREMENTS was having a pace arrow that tells you if you're going above or below your average speed. All CatEye's have this feature, and this Sigma does as well. The only downside is the arrow on the Sigma doesn't display if you're within a certain range of your average.

Having average and current cadence was also really nice. I'm hoping it will help me condition for longer rides--I'm working my way toward a century, with my average ride being 60 miles right now.

The reason--or, reasons--I'm giving this four stars is a) the way the mount is attached, b) the pace arrow not being on constantly, and c) you have to reset your trip length, trip average speed, max speed, etc. individually, rather than all at once. Other than that, so far, so good.
