The Sigma 300 F2.8 lens for Sony/Minolta is a great lens for the price. I could not afford The Sony/Minolta equivalent as it was over twice the price. The color, contrast and resolution of this lens is excellent and works great with 1.4 and 2.0 Sigma teleconverters. It also works great with the in-camera image stabilization on the Sony DSLR cameras.

I wanted more reach for wildlife photography wanted so I settled on the this lens for use with my Nikon D90. I find it to be sharp even with the 2X teleconverter. I use it with a monopod mostly except for birds in flight. It is heavy and the only monopod head I could find to handle it is the one from Really Right Stuff. The build quality looks to be excellent. If they ever made a stabilized version, which they will one day, the big boys will be hurtin'.

I could not afford Nikon's VR 300mm lens so I picked this one up instead. I've routinely shot with Sigma's 1.4x Teleconverter and 2.0x TC attached and have gotten brilliant results. The lens is more than sharp enough wide open, even with the 2x TC on it. I often photograph birds and there is plenty of detail in the photos. This lens is simply brilliant.

I have had this lens (in Canon) for over 10 years and it still works flawlessly - I can honestly say this lens performs with the best in class at any price including Canon - the only Cons are it's BIG AND HEAVY - due to it's size it's AF motor is not as fast as a smaller lens - also no external filter avail to fit the huge lens - it uses smaller internal filters - the Lens Hood w/rubber tip doubles as a shock-bump protector for the lens and is well forward of the Main lens. I first used this with a Canon D60 6.3 mp and was shocked at how good it made that camera perform - you will be amazed if you use it with the 5D MkII - most lenses can't utilize the cameras full capability so when you use a lens like this you will see a huge increase in clarity and resolution you never knew the camera was capable of producing - if you doubt I'd say rent one BUT BEWARE - YOU WILL BE SO IMPRESSED YOU MOST LIKELY WILL BUY ONE AND THEY ARE NOT CHEAP. OH, AND YOU WILL ALSO BUY THE 1.4 AND 2X APO TELE CONVERTERS TO MAX OUT THE CC AT SOME POINT.

UPDATE TO REVIEW - I would urge anyone that has trouble with this lens to contact SIGMA repair as they have improved their response a lot over the last year - this is a stellar lens and will knock your socks off if you get it repaired - Yes - it is designed for full frame but performs excellent with APS-C bases as well - it uses a 46 mm filter system that drops in - when mounting make sure you mount the tripod to the lens base not the Camera as the lens is too heavy to hang off the camera and will also be out of balance - also when off tripod use a hand grip (with wrist strap for security) that screws into the lens base as a forward support and your hand on the camera base for balance - this works best for me.

I bought this lens primarily for sports photography and in no way has it disappointed. I had been using my Canon 100-400 but it was jus too slow, though I like the reach it afforded me for times when the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 just wasn't long enough. So I took a shot on this beauty since it was much more affordable than the Canon equivalent and haven't regretted it for a second. I have taken my best pics with this lens; the creamy bokeh this lens creates is just gorgeous; its also fast and accurate and I get gorgeous results reliably.

I have used this lens at the dirt bike track, auto racing track, and drag strip, and it has performed admirably every time. I just put in a rental order for the Sigma 1.4x extender for my trip out to Laguna Seca for the Moto GP, so I'll report back with how the lens responds to the extender. My guess is that it will be just fine.
