5.0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Surprise, May 23, 2011

This review is from: Sigmund Romberg and His Orchestra (Audio CD)
I am new to the wonderful music of Sigmund Romberg (although once you know what he wrote you realize you have heard many of his tunes before). I'm also new to Operetta in general. I bought this Cd because I thought surely the composer conducting and arranging his own work would do it supreme justice. Another factor was the date of recording (mid 40's to early 50's when recording techniques were sufficient to compare to the clarity of today).
I was not disappointed, in fact the reality surpassed my hopes, this sounds as lush and dramatic as if the MGM Hollywood orchestra were scoring a Romberg musical (which they did). The singers he has chosen are also excellent with strong, proud & expressive voices. It may be true that these are not all the complete scores of each show but it seems to me each song is presented in it's full (and possibly even extended) form. An interesting side-note is that Sigmund passed away a few weeks after he recorded the last of these sessions, what a legacy he managed to leave us.
I have just received this today and am quite beside myself with discovering how beautifully presented the music on this Cd is. I bought this along with 'Romberg conducts Romberg volume 1' and recommend them both equally.

5.0 out of 5 stars Music for the romantic soul, November 4, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sigmund Romberg and His Orchestra (Audio CD)
Sigmund Romberg created some of the most hauntingly beautiful music ever written. Once you start humming a Romberg song, it becomes infectiously locked into your mind...and soul, to recall and cherish forever. This is a fine, but not encompassing or fully inclusive selection. I wish that the lovely songs from "The Girl of the Golden West" {Corny? It's based on a very early Puccini Opera!) were included.

But Romberg is to remember and relive, recall deep, special love and romance.

I very much appreciate Amazon's deft ability to market such fine audio CDs.
