5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing. I was lucky to get the vinyl., February 10, 2011
This review is from: In the Sign (Audio CD)
This is without a doubt one of the best albums in black metal. I was lucky to find this record used at a record store here in san antonio, and in great condition. This is amazing, absolutely amazing. Words cannot describe the intensity of this album and its Dark beauty.

Open the gates: GREAT intro. Makes you wana keep listening to the album. Its fast drumming and guitar makes it one of the best. Its such a fast song but very simple note wise. They turned simple notes into complex songs. I love it! 5/5

Shadows over Transylvania: Slower, but keeps the dark feeling. Guitar is incredible. Stays in the same kind of rhythm as open the gates but with a great ending. The notes at the end make you wana headbang really heavily and slow. 4/5

My Dark Desires: I guess you could consider this one the slow song of the album, but is amazingly written. Great rhythm and tempo. Keeps you in the mood to listen. This is one of my favorites on the album other then open the gates 5/5

In the sign of the horns: Goes back to the speed of open the gates but with a slow intro. Keeps the mood dark and evil. great ending to that side of the record 4/5

Equimanthorn: ok now for the cover songs. I honestly did not like alot of bands from the 1st wave of black metal because of their voices. I did not like bathory because his voice bugged the living hell out of me. idk y... That being said, this cover makes this song from them come to live. This makes it soo much better then the original. 5/5

Call from the grave: Same as before. Never liked bathory... This is much better 5/5

4.0 out of 5 stars DARK FUNERAL - Only Death Is Real!!, September 13, 2000
This review is from: In the Sign... (Audio CD)
Well, this is Dark Funeral's legendary 1994 debut mCD remastered plus 2 very killer bonus tracks, and they are indeed killer, 6 diabolical tracks in total! "Equimanthorn", and "Call from the grave" are the extra 2.. This mCD is pretty good.. Hellish guitar riffing, wicked hateful vocals, thunderous drumming, somewhat raw production, all make up for an *evil* sounding CD! If you have not heard Dark Funeral, then this may be a good CD for you to start of with, or just get their "Secrets of the black arts..", or "Vobiscum Satanas" All in all, this mCD is not bad at all, but I highly recommend you getting "Secrets of.." If you like Dark Funeral, also check out killer swedisn BM acts like.. Funeral Mist, Triumphator, Setherial, Sarcasm.. Well, that's all for now.. Remember, only Death is real!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars THE CD FROM HELL, September 16, 2005

SOUNDWAVE "ICE-T" (Decepticon Headquarters) - See all my reviews
This review is from: In the Sign (Audio CD)
This is Dark Funeral's first CD plus 2 cover tracks. I haven't heard the cover tracks, so I can only comment on the first 4 track.

You hear the gates open and close behind you in a very evil and gloomy sounding way on the intro(not plain and boring like on Deicide's debut album) and then it hits you like a volcanic erruption. The vocals are not cheap shrieks, there are multiple tones of treble/mid/bass in the vocals, and his style is something I have never heard before or after I heard this. The guitars sound a bit like that of the band Dissection (which I like very much), but the vocals are not whiney like Dissection's vocalist. These are the most terrifying vocals you will ever hear, actually sounds demonic, not like some dumb joke like the band Immortal's vocalist puts forth (I used to like Immortal, I don't hate them or their music, I just can't take it seriously anymore (Black Metal is a serious genre, when I want comedy I listen to Mr.Bungle). Anyway, if you need a totally brutal Black Metal CD that can live in your CD player instead of gathering dust, then this one is what you are looking for. I can listen to this CD all day non-stop and still not get bored of it.

"SAAAAAAYYYTAAAAAAN"......

5.0 out of 5 stars Brutal, evil black metal, April 17, 2003
This review is from: In the Sign (Audio CD)
This is a re-release of Dark Funeral's first CD with 2 bonus cover songs added on. Basically, if you like brutal, violent, fast black metal like Marduk you will probably like this. The production on this CD is surprisingly good considering it was released at a time when Dark Funeral was relatively poor. Anyways, if you are a true black metal fan you probably already own this so I won't say anything more except BUY THIS! Oh yeah and the best song is "In the Sign of the Horns". Hail Black Metal

4.0 out of 5 stars Chilly DF Choons, July 28, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: In the Sign (Audio CD)
This spiky mini-album uncommonly uses strong reverb on the vocals - possibly heresy, but I think it sounds good that way. The actual voice is quite tortured and not so pleasant. The playing is not Meshuggah tight, but still pretty good. And, the sound quality is a little soft. A remaster might give it more punch, even accounting for the Black thing of narrowly chiseled frequencies, little bass and a lack of dynamic range. But in spite of all this grumbling, I'd say this still hits on all cylinders. It's the rare Black Metal that isn't obnoxiously repetitive or self-defeatingly lo-fi. These guys do something (slightly) different in a good way. But note the short run time!
