Book Description

December 1991

“I DO NOT THINK I WANT TO BE MARRIED AT ALL. I WANT TO BE RICH. VERY RICH….”

Miss Henrietta Bascombe ‘s closest of friends chums gasped to hear of such a well-bred lady talk of going into trade, but Henrietta was determined to turn her pittance of an inheritance into a fortune by opening a London sweet shop that would rival the famous Gunther’s! Undaunted by a challenge, Henrietta proceeded to hang out the traditional confectioners sign of a golden pineapple and soon earned the custom of the entire haute ton. That is, until the proud Earl of Carrisdowne took exception to his younger brother and his best friend ogling the girls behind Bascombe’s counter. It was clear to the earl that Miss Bascombe would have to be put out of business and soon. But the earl looked forward to tangling with the fiery-eyed proprietor much more than he was willing to admit…

ABOUT THE SERIES

Determined heroines run the gamut from those who set out by running a confectioners sweet shop to others who are willing to disguise themselves as boys to get by and do what they have to do. Whatever the matter, the Regency series brings us heroines of style, grace, and determination - women who are not afraid to use their smarts to seek the stature or standing they feel they need. They may come from humble beginnings (or not, depending) but what these heroines share is a determination unmatched that leaves us turning page after page as we follow them in their dance.

5.0 out of 5 stars No well bred lady goes into trade..., October 10, 2000

Can you imagine being good for nothing but marriage? Henrietta can't imagine, and decides to take her pittance of an inheritance and turn it into a fortune... but opening a London Sweet Shop? Soon, she and her beautiful partners are in business, working day and night to make lovely pastries, etc, to entice the passersby to patronize her shop. Her unseemly business is a success until the Earl of Carrisdowne catches his young brother and friend ogling the pretty girls behind the counter. A look at Henrietta made the Earl determined to put the place out of business and have her for his own! Says Henrietta..."I DON'T THINK SO!"

5.0 out of 5 stars An unforgettable & quick read! Difficult to put down!, May 2, 2001

What can I say? You are sad at the end of the book because you hate to say good-bye to the characters. A fresh, original (avoiding the usual cliches)book. You will want to read this one again and again!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the best Marion Chesney, May 22, 2011
I love Marion Chesney books. I have found them entertaining, they are a quick read and I can count on them. They are chessy- the formula is boy meets girl, one is in love with someone else, there is a threat on there life, someone dies, they end up together and they love happily ever after. Like Barbara Cartland without the extra trim. However, I couldn't read this one- I stopped after the second chapter.
