5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource
I began signing with my daughter before she was a year old. "Again, more, and sit down" were her first signs. People have been amazed at the level of understanding that she has and I think it helped that we used signs at an early age. I recently purchased the "Sign with Me" tape for my daughter (now almost 3) and son (9 months). After watching it...

This video is disappointing. Offering only 10 signs, an
adorable girl of about 3 or 4 signs each of (only) 10 signs. After she quickly and imprecisely shows the sign several times, a puppet takes over and performs a slow, little skit that demonstrates the object of the sign in some way. He puts a ball through a hoop for the word "ball," for instance. The actions of the puppet do not reinforce the sign, which isn't repeated, and only distracts the viewer from the sign the action illustrates. In one case of extreme sign confusion, an adult giving a baby a bottle of juice to demonstrate "milk!"

This video borrows heavily from the Baby Einstein videos, which are designed to introduce children to art and music. If you're looking for a video for your toddler, I'd suggest sticking with the original Baby Einstein. If you want to learn sign language with your child, get Baby See 'n Sign.

2.0 out of 5 stars Entertains but does not do much for teaching signs!, August 4, 2003

I was VERY disappointed! This viedo shows poor versions of only a FEW signs, and while they SHOW and SAY the word, they only sign it once or twice, and poorly done. They verbally repeat the word many times, but fail to SHOW the sign as often! They waste a LOT of time showing kids (the producer's ?)doing things, with nothing but music with it.
I would much prefer to reccomend "Talking Hands" or Joseph Garcia's kit "Sign with your Baby", or "Sign Me a Story", or even "Baby See and Sign" (not the best, though).
While my 22 mo. daughter loved it, it was NOT doing much to teach her to SIGN, which is why I bought it. Save your money!

1.0 out of 5 stars I'd give it a lower rating if I could, January 5, 2004

A waste of money...puppets are cute for kids, but they don't sign very well...I could hardly make out the signs I was supposed to be learning. Children signing is great for kids to relate to, but it was really hard to figure out what the proper sign was supposed to be. I don't think my child learned anything from watching it. I wouldn't recommend this video to anyone unless of course you've got money to burn in which case I'll send you my copy for free.

I recently purchased the "Sign with Me" tape for my daughter (now almost 3) and son (9 months). After watching it numerous times in the past 3 days, Ana has learned all the new signs, and Erik understands "milk and more". This tape has all the elements to ensure happy viewing. Our family loves it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Reduce frustration and learn to sign with your child, June 2, 2001

My wife and I are expecting our first baby (a girl) at the end of June. Like all new moms & dads we have been researching how to be the best parents we can be for the benefit of our child. Lots of new ideas are out there, but we thought this was one of the best -- learning to communicate with your child before they can speak.

A friend recommended this video, which we purchased and watched immediately, of course! She bought the video last year when her baby was 8 months old and has since successfully learned to sign with her using about 20 signs including hungry and need diaper changed (my top priorities).

What she made clear is that this video is an introduction to teach the concepts behind signing. One thing that surprised me is that there isn't a standard set of signs, like sign language for deaf people, but instead it's up to the parent to establish each sign with their baby. It took our friend many weeks of persistent reinforcement until her baby started to "sign" that she was hungry. Even after the breakthrough she said it took several more weeks to teach other signs that she thought were important.

Like most self-help guides it seems obvious this isn't a Barney "learn to count to three" video for a child. What the video *does* provide is a great introduction for baby and parents of what signing is and how to get started. While we know it will be hard work to teach our baby to sign we are committed to the effort and this video has been a great learning tool on the fundamentals to get us off to the right start.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great kid's video...entertaining and educational, October 10, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Sign With Me [VHS] (VHS Tape)
My 15 month old daughter loves this video! I first introduced it to her when she was 11 months old. She even learned a few signs soley from the video...without my intervention/assistance. She laughs with the puppet antics and enjoys seeing the kids doing things she does. My bachelor brother of 32 years even sings the theme song to her. It seems like some of the negative reviews focus on problems from the parent's perspective. Sure, there are some things that could be improved...like juice in the bottle when the baby signs "milk". In my opinion, this video is aimed at the kids and they enjoy it. My 4 year old nephew thinks its fun and is teaching his younger brother how to sign. What counts is that kids learn from this video! I also like it's reasonable price. I now use it as a gift at baby showers or for first birthdays.

5.0 out of 5 stars We Love This Video!, January 24, 2001

This is my one year olds favorite! I bought the video thinking he would enjoy the music and watching the children and that I could learn some signs to teach him. I was right, but he also picked up signs for flower, ball, and dance just from watching! I was totally amazed!

My son loves Sunny Bunny and the rest of the cast and I love that we can interact with a video rather than him just stare at the screen.

Signing has been a great way for us to communicate and this video is a great aid!

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertains while it educates, November 13, 2000

This video is a joy to watch with young children. We put it in the vhs during a birthday party and the children were fascinated with the puppets and music. Some of them even started to sign without the encouragement of the adults in the room. The video however is most effective when parent or other adult and child watch it together and interact with the video. I bought a copy and watched it with my granddaughter during a vist. A friend borrowed it while her grandchildren were visiting and her daughter and baby started to sign for milk immediately. I also visited the Web Site mentioned on the case (Signwithme.com) and found the video dictionary very helpful. I hope the author produces more of these videos. It did everything it said it would do and more.

OK, well my child LOVED this video, but it was not very good as far as teaching signs. It doesn't really connect the sign to the action, and the words they teach are not very helpful or useful.
