Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered reissue of the Japanese Prog/Hard Rock band's 1977 sophomore album. Outside of a handful of obscure Japanese Progressive Rock groups, Bow Wow was one of the first native groups to play in a style that suggested they might actually have international potential. Signal Fire is an album of intense Hard Rock fire-power. A record that combines fast-as-a-shark riffing with blistering lead guitar work and unique multi-layered phasing of a kind that had not previously been applied to Hard Rock recordings in such an impressive manner. At this point, guitarist Kyoji Yamamoto was fast establishing himself as a craftsman with supreme technical ability. His playing was taking on a seriously brilliant sheen, combining the techniques and flare of influential Western players such as Ritchie Blackmore and Jimi Hendrix yet leaving room to create a style of his own. Rock Candy. --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Listen up, you legions of NWOBHM fanatics!!, December 30, 2009

Or make that the New Wave of Japanese Heavy Metal!!What the heck is "BowWow" you may be asking??If I hadnt known better,i'd a guessed some (deservedly) forgotten hair-metal band from the 80's.Not so fast. This is being heralded as an unsung Hard Rock classic from 1977,with such heavy hitters as Metallica and Iron Maiden(!) cited as being majorly influenced by these Japanese musicians - friend, this is Heavy Metal of the highest order! This is from 1977?? Unreal! I can see how not only Iron Maiden, but the ENTIRE New Wave of British Heavy Metal scene took ahold of this thing and went flying! The gallop, the riffing, its all here! Ive read other mentions of this being the Eastern version of what Van Halen was doing concurrently on the West Coast, what with Eddie's hammer/tap-on style, but have NO worries of this being a Japanese Van Halen clone-far from it! Nothing against early Van Halen but this is a WAY heavier,at times proto-speed metal(!) "hard rock" masterpiece! How did this remain unknown for so long?!?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Metal From The East, December 31, 2006

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Signal Fire (Mlps) (Audio CD)
Signal is among Bow Wow's two or three best albums. They opened for Kiss on their first Japanese tour. If you are a fan of 70's/80's hard rock/metal and want to hear a band with serious instrumental chops, Signal Fire is for you. I always felt sorry for them, people always confused their name with a silly Brit-Pop novelty act and (uggghhh!)

a rapper.
