We installed this smoke alarm and recorded the suggested recording in it. We have not done a trial run while my 5-year old is asleep yet, but we have done it during the day and it appears to be plenty loud. It sounds an alarm, then plays my recording telling my son to get out of bed, go down the stairs, go out the front door, and meet us in the driveway.

I was sickened to say the least to find out that none of our three children, ages 8, 6 and 3 woke up during a fire drill to the traditional alarm even though we let it beep for 2 full minutes. My husband and I even opened their bedroom doors, and although the alarm is right outside, not a one of them so much as flinched. I was so excited to learn of the vocal smoke alarm and thought that my worries were over. Was I wrong! First, I was disappointed to find that there was no volume control. It is difficult to have a firm voice and not come across as screaming since you are trying to keep the children calm and not completely scare them to death. I love the concept, however, when we did another fire drill using the vocal smoke alarm, again none of our children woke up. It would be better if it was louder and would also activate another alarm inside each bedroom to go off. Maybe one that sounds like a bag of chips being opened, because for some reason they will wake up to that, but not to extremely loud beeping or this particular vocal alarm.
