5.0 out of 5 stars Still the Best Value for the Beginner and Interim Student
This was my first book on body language. It is still the one I use and recommend more than any other. It has all the basics in a no-nonsense KIS (Keep It Simple) format. A couple of items are a bit dated, (like the smoking and eyeglass mannerisms), but there is still 98% excellent material. Easy to read and understand. It is illustrated - simple illustrations but...

I recently entered the sales world. I realized during my short tenure how important body language is. This book does a good job of getting me started in at least one area. Being aware of my own body language, so others see me as more friendly and open.

It is an easy read with ok pictures. If you know little or nothing about body language, this is a good book to start with. Just don't expect to know everything, because body language is not black and white. I do recommend the book. Yes, I do read reviews and have been fooled by them often. I sometimes wonder if some of these people are paid to give these outstanding reviews or if I just have higher expectations. Good reading.

Excellent, straight-forward book on deciphering body language. Line drawn illustrations, clearly written text without a lot of scientific mumbo jumbo and advice on how to react to certain behaviors to try to change situations to your advantage. Useful for anyone who wants to communicate more effectively.

2.0 out of 5 stars Outdated, December 18, 2004

I bought this book against my better judgement and lack something better. I had hoped to find something more professional. I don't think there is a lot of information available on this subject, especially stated in a highly scientific manner.

This is a light and frilly, easy to read book that gives some good hints to common gestures. I find the material to be rather non-concrete with lots of ... "it could mean this, *if* it is paired with ...". The material is a bit outdated in as far as common gestures can be. It is in dire need of a work over considering if you read it, you can imagine yourself to be in the 70s or 80s. Gestures that come about in business and dating have changed a bit, become more outgoing.

One paragraph in the book could get you shot. It states that you should try and get out of your car and head over to the policeman's vehicle to confront him in a open and honest manner when have been stopped for a traffic violation. In Texas one can get shot for this. The golden rule as everyone knows is, stay in your car with your hands in view on the steering wheel!

So, all in all. I recommend this book for a light read. It is good to see some of the common gestures jotted down in black & white, but don't expect it to give you an indepth view on the human psyche.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of Class, November 27, 2002

With so much fluff out there, Allan Pease's "Signals" is a refreshing, authoritive and well-written piece on Kinestics (Body Language). His illustrator, DavePassalacqua, really made this the Best of Class for me.

The book is very well organized, though not a candidate for reading in a single sitting. Well worth the investment both in time and purchase price. I found Wainwright's "Body Language" perhaps more authorative but, of the two, I recommend reading "Signals" first. (But read them both if you can).

4.0 out of 5 stars EXCELENT BOOK, IF YOU ARE A BEGINER, November 25, 2002

This review is from: Signals: How To Use Body Language For Power, Success, And Love (Paperback)
When I was initially becoming interested in Body Language Issue, this was the first book I bought and read about it. It was a good choice. This book contains an explanation about the most common manners, gestures and postures people do on a particular humor, thinking or circunstance. It will be very helpful for you if you are starting on this issue. But don't expect a high detailed explanation about clusters and sequences of body movements. And the most important, don't think you'll know everything about body language after read this book. I have far beyond reading about this, and I'm still learning new things.

5.0 out of 5 stars You will love it if you like books, July 29, 2005
This review is from: Signals: How To Use Body Language For Power, Success, And Love (Paperback)
There are lots of books on the subject. This has been published in the eighties and and you can tell it as soon as you have it in your hands: line drawn pictures (instead of photos), young men wearing ties and comments on smoking.

But it is a book that has kept its qualities and now is enriched with the flair of the passing of time.

What I most like is a very consistent structure: chapters are organized in a logical order and describe in a straight-forward manner a lot of body languague, that you can better understand with the pictures. It is very clearly written and if you do not have much time, you can just look at the pictures and the descriptive captions.

It is a good book you can combine with more in-depth 'treatises' (Desmond Morris' Man Watching is a classic).

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding and a permanent reference book., May 29, 1999

I have been rereading this book for over ten years. The illustrations are the bonus, besides giving excellent information. (I am not a salesman, by the way.) Why is it out of print??? It needs to be republished. I have given away several copies.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have!, December 29, 2001
This review is from: Signals: How To Use Body Language For Power, Success, And Love (Paperback)
Are you a lonely person? Have you tried to make friends but always felt that people just didn't like you? Then this book is for you.

Are you in sales? Have you tried to sell a product and even though the presentation was great the customer didn't buy? Then this book is for you.

Have you tried to get close to a girl and even though everything seemed going well, you just didn't know for sure if she likes you too? Then this book is for you.

I can go on and on with examples such as the above, but I'll stop to tell you that you have to buy this book. A speech conversation is not the only way to communicate with people, and it turns out that it's even the poorest way of communication. Understanding body language is really important if you want to communicate well with others.

This book is a great intro to body language and it's for everyone. It's easy, filled with illustrations and teaches you how to act with people and how to decode their movements. You will never regret buying this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars The best body language book I've seen, August 7, 2007
By

This review is from: Signals: How To Use Body Language For Power, Success, And Love (Paperback)
If you've looked for books about understanding body language, you've probably found the same thing I have: there aren't many good choices. Maybe this is simply due to the live, in-person nature of the topic. Still, while there isn't a perfect resource out there, this book has been the best that I've seen.

Some people seem to naturally read, and consciously comprehend body language. For others, like myself, body language is something of a black art. Sure, we still process it subconsciously, but on a conscious level we can't understand why we feel so welcome by some people and so unwelcome by others. Or worse, we don't understand what WE are doing to make others feel unwelcome by us. This book does a very good job of explaining those things. When you're done reading you'll want more, but you'll at least get some useful information out of this book before you set it down.

Also, as a side note, I found that a number of examples given in the book might be of interest to poker players who want to learn to recognize signs of discomfort or "bluffing".
