I have been buying these Kirkland almonds (as well as almonds from Superior Nut Co.) for years...until now. I contacted Costco regarding their pasteurization method. They replied that they use the PPO method. (PPO is a highly toxic fumigation treatment with propylene oxide, which unbelievably, was used as a fuel by the American Motorcycle and National Hot Rod Associations....until they banned it, because of its known carcinogenic risks to human beings!)
Very, very disappointed in Costco/Kirkland. From now on I will be buying my almonds from Trader Joe's. Their raw almonds are pasteurized using the "steam" method, which is, as it implies, just steam from plain old water.

Raw almonds are not US almonds, these are but PPO almonds and I consumed it for few years, did not get sick or die but I stopped since I got my hands on raw not roasted, and not pasteurized, not steamed almonds from EU since US law allows imported almonds not to be pasteurized but any almond produced in US and sold in US has to be pasteurized but not pasteurized when exported and sold outside US. If pasteurization is a big issue then purchase almonds from EU or second option is steamed almonds from CA sold in many stores in US. Almonds crack more teeth than any other nut. I consume almonds soaked in water for 24 hours since it tastes much better when softer. Almonds offer vitamin E, lowest saturated fat and calcium. I get all my minerals from seeds and nuts and fruits offer vitamins. Fish is the best protein to me unmatched to any other protein.

PASTEURIZATION: Current methods of almond pasteurization use chemical washes or fumigation with toxic propylene oxide (PPO), steam or infrared heat emitters' technology. Since September 2007, the Almond Board of California has required all almonds including those labeled as "organic" to receive some type of wash or heat treatment to eliminate potential pathogens on their surface. In 2003 and 2004, at least 29 individuals in the U.S. and Canada became ill in a Salmonella outbreak linked to almonds distributed by Paramount Farms and sold at Costco. PPOs have been around since 2003 and 80% of almonds sold are PPOs except sliced or slivered almonds which are steamed pasteurized not PPO since the interior of almonds can not be PPO-ed. Kirkland Almonds are grade "A" PPO almonds while others are not grade "A" and a lesser grade almonds.

I've been trying to reorient my diet such that I eat much less animal products and much more fresh fruits, dried fruits, fresh vegetables and nuts. My goal is to eat much less refined sugars. trans-fats, animal fats and cholesterol. Supposedly, this should help my health in a number of ways. So far the only noticeable things are a drop in weight and blood pressure. That's a start, a good start.

One of the items I'm increasing is nuts and seeds. I find a good place to get these items in bulk quantity is Costco, particularly with their Kirkland Signature brand. Of course, a lot of people don't live anywhere near a Costco, but the branded items are still easily available online.

Yesterday, I picked up a big bag (3 pounds or 48 ounces) of almonds. The almonds are fresh and tasty and unsalted. I actually, prefer salted nuts, but I'm also trying to cut the intake of salt so it's good to find these unsalted ones. The quality is excellent. About the only negative I can note is that the bag doesn't hold up well after being opened so I'll have to transfer the contents to a large zip-lock bag to attempt to maintain freshness. We use these nuts for meals and snacks, plus our three-year-old toddler enjoys them with his meals. It's a good product.

I love almost all Kirkland products and these are no exception! They are incredibly fresh and flavorful. Sadly, I moved to a city with no Costco but am so glad I am able to get my favorite almonds online.

The almonds were old .Not as fresh as Signature Almonds sold at Costco. Same package, different age. Exellent product otherwise.

I'm very happy with this purchase. I was looking for a huge bag of almonds and that's exactly what I received. I decided to start adding a serving of almonds in my hot cereal in the morning for health reasons. I'm sure glad I did and am glad I ordered these. The bag is huge. It says on the bag to store in the fridge to make them fresher longer. So that's what I did. They taste great and give me a little extra energy in the morning. When I run out I intend to order these again.
