I happened to click on a Facebook Ad featuring this album/artist while I was posting something about Miles Davis on Facebook. A perfect example of ad targeting done right. I love this album and play it all the time.

In all of Laszlo Gardony's recordings the salient quality is joy, brimming goodwill, as he delivers a soulful, elegant, proficient music with his able cohorts. There is no need to discusss technique or tempo. Laszlo's rhythms are diverse and always appropriate. Even a cursory listen would demonstrate technique for those inclined to assess it. What sets him apart from many jazz pianists is that he has no need to embroider (rococo) his lines or pick 'hip' augmentations or substitutions to show his modernity. He is classic, establishing his presence from the very first notes. His choice of repertoire is always interesting. Perhaps the Beatles tunes here will make it easier for new listeners to hear what Laszlo brings to a tune. Happy listening!

I have every one of his albums, have seen Gardony perform live on several occasions, and always come away from hearing him and watching him perform with a sense of joy and peace. Live, he is so completely immersed in his music and instrument that I think he has forgotten the crowd remains with him, silent and attuned. On disc, it translates equally beautifully.

This is an interesting departure with LG's 9th album, and well worth the wait. Absolutely stunning. Get it. Enjoy it. Then enjoy it again!

Would give 10 stars but am limited to 5.

Laszlo Gardony's new release "Signature Time" is a highly original blend of jazz, gospel, soul and rock that celebrates the African heritage of these wonderful musical styles. "Signature Time" seamlessly follows his previous releases "Natural Instinct" and "Dig Deep" in terms of eschewing the gutsy virtuosity and complexity of his earlier records for an even gutsier focus on simplicity and groove. It is astounding how much emotion and depth flow from the tune "Silent Words" - a composition so sparse, so "silent" and still so powerful. "On African Land" is a catchy modal song driven by a strong groove and a fun dialogue between melody and bassline. Gardony's solo is stellar, showcasing his great touch and technique and his subtle improvisational skill.

Yoron Israel and John Lockwood anchor the music beautifully, creating an elastic and overarching groove. Israel's drumming is subtle and colorful with shimmering overtones. This trio is fully in sync - simply one of the best jazz piano trios working today, and one with a very unique message. Stan Strickland's contributions on select tracks are very musical and fit right in, ranging from spiritual chanting to an expressive sax solo. The recording quality is exceptional.
