Title is misleading! It doesn't teach phrases as used by Deaf,
By A Customer
This review is from: Signing Everyday Phrases (Perigee) (Mass Market Paperback)
If you are expecting to sign phrases as the Deaf use (i.e. American Sign Language), this book is NOT for you. Some places in the book did not list the approiate sign for that context. This reviewer would recomend staying away from this book as it presents Pidgen Sign English but too often with the wrong sign.

NOT for ASL Students,
This review is from: Signing Everyday Phrases (Perigee) (Mass Market Paperback)
As a student of American Sign Language (ASL), I have successfully used Flodin's earlier book, "Signing Illustrated: The Complete Learning Guide," as a favorite reference through two semesters of the basics. I would, however, withhold any recommendation of "Signing Everyday Phrases" to a student of ASL. ASL is recognized as a true language and as such has its own specific syntax. "Signing Everyday Phrases" is an offering in Signed English which presents a different word order from ASL and uses many more signs to convey the same meaning. Since this book is about putting signed words together to form phrases and short sentences and appropriate syntax is a must in ASL, this book is definitely not for the student of ASL.

Not For Serious Signers,
This review is from: Signing Everyday Phrases (Perigee) (Mass Market Paperback)
Like other reviews on this book, it's important for me to mention that the title is misleading. "Signing Everyday Phrases" leads potential ASL students to believe that this book shows you how to sign phrases in American Sign Language. In reality, it shows you Signed English, something that is NOT used by adult Deaf people. This is speaking as an adult Deaf person.Really the only thing good about this book would be if you are looking to communicate with a deaf child. Otherwise, please look the other way and you'll find many more suitable resources. (Note: Some of Mickey Flodin's books are highly recommended, but basically just the ones that shows signs alone). :o(

Not ASL!,

This review is from: Signing Everyday Phrases (Paperback)
This book is not ASL at all; it is Signed Exact English: english syntax, word order, articles and pronouns everywhere, prepositions, and auxiliary verbs ("am").The introduction specifies that the contents are American Sign Language and says nothing about SEE. This claim is a falsehood that seems intentional; no one who knows this much about signs could not know the difference. I will buy nothing from this publisher (Perigee) in this topic again.

Very good for hearing people who want to use sign to communicate,

I am always looking for the book to learn signed English, and this is a very good book for that.As you know, ASL has its own specific syntax, and it makes us (hearing people) hard to learn ASL. Even though we want to learn how to communicate with deaf people and/or hard-to-hear people, it is very difficult for us to learn its syntax. However, sign language is not only ASL, but also signed English. I heard some deaf people are strict to use ASL, but not all people. We always want to communicate with deaf/hard-to-hear people, and they can accept us, too! Now, we can communicate with them! We can learn how to communicate with them with using regular English. Also this book is easy to carry. Most of daily-use phrases are in this book, so very useful for us. Now, I can enjoy communicating with my neibour who is deaf. This is a great experience for both of us.

This book is a good book for learning Basic Sign Language phrases. I have all the asl books by Mickey Flodin, and I think he's really great at explaining the signs, as well as the clear pictures. I will continue to buy his asl books for teaching sign language.
