Not right for kids,
By "twinsmom11" (San Diego, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Signing for Kids (Perigee) (Paperback)
I purchased this book after taking a course in signing for my twins. I was looking for a short book with basic signs that we could use everyday. The publisher seems to have missed the mark on what signs kid would want or need in a simple signing book. For example the section titled "Snacks and Food" has 42 signs, but doesn't have the word vegetable, or any sign for any vegetable. Instead, what they do have is a section of 30 signs on religion, including such everyday usage words for children as "resurrection", "missionary", and "devil". A number of words in this category are helpful including "God", "church", and "prayer", but for the most part the book has a lot of words that adults think children should learn and not nearly enough words that children would use everyday. My suggestion would be to buy a real dictionary from a different publisher that has all the words you will be looking up.

Excellant 1st signing book,
By A Customer
This review is from: Signing for Kids (Perigee) (Paperback)
This book is an excellent book to begin to learn simple ASL signs for all ages. I had checked out of the local library and then purchased as it is a wonderful resource for me to teach my 2yr old signing in order to communicate (he has severe developmental apraxia). I would highly recommend this book!

AN EXCELLENT BEGINNER BOOK...,
By Jill (Ashtabula, Ohio) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Signing for Kids (Perigee) (Paperback)
I work for a non-profit organization that does enrichment programs after school for children in grades 1-6. In one of our schools, there is a deaf child with a full-time interpreter that has created an insurmountable level of curiosity and an awareness of ASL that has caused much excitement at that school. We asked that interpreter a year ago to teach ASL classes for our program and she gladly excepted because so many children asked to be taught so they could communicate with the deaf child. The classes have been filled ever since and we currently employ a deaf teacher to teach hearing children. I found this book while searching and bought it for my daughter who is a very good signer in less than 8 weeks! I am recommending this book to all the parents of children who are in these classes because it is as easy as the very basic beginner books, is more informative, and will grow with the child. (It's also less expensive!) I highly recommend this book.

Signing for Kids,
By A Customer
This review is from: Signing for Kids (Perigee) (Paperback)
I am a hearing mother of a deaf child we have order two copies of this book for our parents and have recomended it to several of our friends. This book is wounderful, because it has the picture as well as written words telling you how to do the sign. Both grandmothers are learning some signs form this book. The reason I only gave it four stars is some of the signs are old and not been updated.

SPEECH DELAY, YOU SAY ?,

THIS IS WHAT THE SPEECH THERAPIST ORDERED.Actually, she wanted me to use signed english. We used signs to help until my child could form more words orally. Now we are learning the language to talk to my friends children. Yhis is a great book to start children learning the third used language in this U.S.A. We let the child pick which word to learn as he gets older. LEARN PIZZA FIRST, OF COURSE !

User friendly and nicely organized, adults or kids.,

This book is organized in a manner which allows for easy use. Signs are grouped into related categories, and the illustrations are clear and simple. I've used many books on signing, and this one is tops for adults as well as kids.

Great format and ideas, but some signs are old or not used.,

While I enjoyed the book's format and ideas, I found that a number of the signs were second choices in reliable sign language sources. I also found that some of the signs were not even used or mentioned in those same reliable sources. It needs to be updated and compared with texts from Gaulludet and other recognized institutions.

Helpful for Toddler Signing,

We started our son at 8 months learning sign lanquage with Baby Signs. A friend had this book and I liked the illustrations and the number of different signs that were available. At 18 months our hearing son has over 50 signs and is learning new ones everyday. I do not have anyother books besides Baby Signs to compare with, but the illustrations are large and clear which is helpful.

I had to buy a SECOND copy of this book because I couldn't get my first copy away from my then 3 year old. He's 4 now, and this book sits on his nightstand. He LOVES to look through the pictures and practice the signs.
Of all the books we have on ASL, these pictures are the easiest to follow. I LOVE this book. The author did an EXCELLENT job! |
