Product Description
Teacher's Aid - for Parents, Teachers and Homeschoolers. Shows how to teach signing to babies or children with special needs. Works for all children of all abilities, music and movement for all. Developed by a Board Certified Music Therapist and a father of a child with special needs. The DVD has three parts, 1. Why Use Signing Songs 2. Song/sign introduction and songs and 3. Songs. 7 songs in all. The DVD is not over stimulatingly with flashing images for children who might be sensitive to it. Using Songs with signs enables babies, children with special needs to speak with their hands before they can talk. Increases clarity of child's wants and needs. Promotes active participation and play. Greatly expands your child's vocabulary. Develops self esteem Combines visual, physical, verbal and musical learning. Stimulates brain development Develops motor skills, using movement. Creates a rich learning environment Fosters language growth and music appreciation. How is sign language used in this video? Sometimes sign language is used to communicate full sentences, especially for children with hearing impairments. In this instance, only specific words in the songs will be highlighted by sign. Target words are paired with signs in music to provide for an opportunity for learning in a structured and fun manner. Signs in this video are not exact; rather they are made to be appropriate for the cognitive and fine motor developmental level of children. The signs, gestures, and imitation skills learned are meant to be an easy way to bridge the gap until more expressive language skills are learned. In addition to specific signs, it is important for children to be able to imitate actions and gestures. Songs in this video provide also provide opportunity to practice imitation skills, not just specific signs. Will sign language inhibit verbal communication? Sign Language may actually facilitate and encourage a child's speech and language development. Signing provides a bridge for communication until verbal speech begins. Often, children learn signs, then as verbal speech is learned pair with signs with the words. Later, children naturally discontinue use of the signs when they are motivated to talk by their environment. Are there any additional benefits of sign? * Sign language may increase a child's independence by providing a way for them to initiate interactions with their environment. * Decrease a child's frustration by providing a developmentally appropriate way to communicate before they can verbalize * May help a child speak sooner by increasing their receptive language vocabulary * Strengthens imitation skills * Increases attention to task * Provides an opportunity to strengthen and develop fine motor skills * Encourage cognitive development and neuron connections in the brain * Provides for increased self-confidence * Gives parents an idea of how much their child understands at a young age

2.0 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing, January 21, 2007
I was eager to learn about this video early in the fall. My children received the DVD as a Christmas gift. After listening to the introduction I was elated, I agree with everything she says, (it's all in the editor's note on the product). Then the songs started and she showed the gestures for the songs. My goodness, I was vastly disappointed with the bare minimum of what would be signs. There are seven songs on the video and I think there might be an average of three signs per song. Twinkle Twinkle Little Star has two signs that she shows in the introduction, one the opening and closing of the hands (from a fist to an open 5 hand) then she does shoe the sign for star, but in the song portion only uses the first sign, for the whole song.

I know children are far more capable than the signs used in the video. I have children with special needs and at 2 years of age they knew more than 70 signs, at 2 1/2 more than 115. Of those signs many are in classic children's song including Twinkle Twinkle.

The only reason the video is not a 1 rating is because it did in fact hold my childrens' attention, even though they were signing more at home watching the video than there were signs in the movie. To boot they were a bit confused as to why the lady on the video wasn't signing as much as they were.

This movie is lying a bit with the title...Yes they are signing songs...but the signs she uses are not true ASL signs. If youare looking to teach your children sign language this is not the movie for you! I am VERY DISAPOINTED WITH THIS!
