This review is from: Signing Time! Volume 11: My Neighborhood DVD (DVD)
As the mother of twins, one hearing and one deaf, I have had the opportunity to check out many programs for teaching ASL to small children. This is by far the best series out there. Most other products are so boring that parents must struggle to stay awake during the production, and there is no way a toddler would tolerate a viewing. My 2-year-old twins request Signing Time all of the time. At home they want the DVDs playing almost constantly. In the car my hearing daughter starts asking for the Signing Time CD before I even have her strapped into her carseat. My 2-year-old deaf daughter is using 5-sign sentences, which is almost unheard of for the deaf child of hearing parents. My extended family owns a total of 6 sets of Signing Time. Whenever my daughters' cousins have a birthday they ask for the latest Signing Time DVDs. Children of all ages love this product.

Our school is currently using Signing Time in an after school program to introduce and teach American Sign Language to children ranging in grades K-6. Rachel does a good job of desribing and demonstating the signs. The music and songs create an enjoyable way to reinforce the new signs learned.

My grandson watched Signing Time from 9 months old to about 2 1/2 and I think it was the most useful tool for communication with a small child. By the time he was around 1, he could tell us when he was hungry or thursty, if he wanted an apple or crackers, etc., and we could tell him when it was time to take a bath or take a nap. Signs are much easier to understand than baby words and we always understood what he was saying, even though some of his signs were only close to what he was shown, they were close enough and unique to him.But don't think this series impedes language at all, he said words and learned things at an earier age. Every word has serveral pictures, like water is the bath tub, the water fountain, the lake, the pool, the hose, waterfall, etc - all things that have water or are water. And every sign that is shown is also spoken. He not only talked early, he learned so many things about animals, actions, behaviors, colors, numbers, etc., in the later programs (#1 is beginning words and the words grow and expand with each subsequent program). The first time we took him to the farmer's market he was almost 2 and he was SOOO excited because he knew what a horse, a cow, a chicken, a pig, a goat, etc. were. He was in awe of seeing them in person! Don't choose just any baby signing program, the child has to love the show and actually learn for it to be effective - and that's exactally what this program is. My grandson loves Rachel and signed "watch Signing Time" first thing everyday, we never had to coax him to watch it. He's 3 years old now and his language and interests have developed greatly. He still signs some things and when my granddaughter starts Signing Time later this year, my grandson will be able to communicate with her too. I love it!

With signs like doctor, firefighter, and police officer, this video is one of the most important signing videos to purchase for your child. There are many other signs such as transportation and businesses around town. You'll love this video!

I have been purchasing Signing Time DVDs for my twin grandsons since they were a year old. They are now 2 1/2 yrs old and still enjoy watching and learning sign language. I would highly recommend these DVD's. When they start school they will have a 'second' language and if one of their classmates is hearing impaired, they will be able to communicate with them.

The entire Signing Time! and Baby Signing Time! series are wonderful. My daughter has a remarkable vocabulary for a 21 month old and I have to credit her favorite program with helping to improve our verbal communications. The series has helped her to speak wonderfully and not only say words but to understand them as well.We don't allow a great deal of TV programming but the Signing Time! series is soothing when she is sick, entertainig on rainy days, and educational. If I have to turn something on, Signing Time! is a good choice.
