Outstanding photographs and reproductions. Well conceived sequencing of images by John T. Hill. And another outstanding book printed by Steidl. In Sekaer's own words from 1936 and printed on the book jacket: "A vital relation to contemporary life such as one feels in these pictures, has always been an essential factor of any great art expression. If photography is to prove its worth as an art form it will probably be in this direction." I look forward to seeing the work at the High Museum Exhibition that this book catalogs and learning more about Sekaer. Highly recommended.

Format: Hardcover
First of all, this is a handsome book: well designed, beautifully printed, and like all Steidl books, solidly produced. I had known of Peter Sekaer, traveling companion of Walker Evans, and had always thought of his photographs as derivative of the work of his great FSA photographer friend.

But "Signs of Life: Photographs by Peter Sekaer" has allowed me a new perspective. Whether he is photographing the same subjects as Evans or subject matter all his own, Sekaer has his own eye, his own particular vision of 30s America that this volume showcases admirably. I really like these photographs, and not least the full color reproduction of "The Sekaer Album" toward the end of the book.

The essay by John T. Hill (who has written several books on Mr. Evans), which focuses on Sekaer the photographer, is informative and enjoyable; and the afterword by Sekaer's daughter, Christina, provides a personal portrait of her father during the years of her childhood.

Whether you are an "Evans person" or simply a lover of fine documentary photography, this book is a sure thing. You will be surprised and delighted by "Signs of Life: Photographs by Peter Sekaer."

This is an excellent photographic chronicle of a depressed part of the USA in the twenties and thirties. The book is comapnion to the exhibition in the Atlanta High Museum. It may appear pricey but it is worth every single penny. One cannot have enough going through the collection. For anybody involved in photography or interested in that period this is a must. I am thorough;y recommending this book. It is excellent.

Extra fast service; item better than described. As a former bookseller, I've done business with Powell's for many years and have always been satisfied.
