Editorial Reviews

Review

"Utterly delightful.... she works her way into listeners hearts... a joy to
hear" --New York Times

"In addition to the signs of life that burst through every note of this disc, Rondi Charleston has also filled it with unmistakable signs of growth. Her interpretive skills, already well documented on her previous CDs, display added depth as she covers the music of five jazz and pop heavyweights. Her collaborative skills - one of the traits that mark Charleston as a jazz vocalist - remain steady and sure as she surrounds herself with a cast of imposing partners. Best of all, the inclusion of five originals signal that Charleston has graduated from a singer who somtimes composes to a serious songwriter, one with a broad vision and
lyrical skills to match." --Bob Blumenthal, Grammy Award Winning Journalist

"Rondi Charleston is one of those rare artists for whom a song's meaning is as important as its melody. Her personal, thought-provoking, original songs slow the heartbeat and raise the mental senses with a documentarian's acuity. Not many jazz singers dig as deep with such
intensity" --Downbeat

2.0 out of 5 stars LJH April 10, 2014
Format:Audio CD
Independent of her verve and elan as a vocalist, this album is vitiated by what I dub the Lyricized Jazz Holocaust, where classics such as Wayne Shorter's sublime "Footprints"-- made even more scintillating by the quintet on "Miles Smiles"--is utterly trashed by overlain lyrics.
Who ever though this was a good idea? Is the objective simply to make the music accessible to a wider audience? A Faustian bargain. Why don't we lyricize Beethoven's late piano sonatas next?

One of the earliest, or at least most egregious examples of the LJH, is Carmen McCrae's butchering of the Monk canon, on "Carmen Does Monk", which is a disgrace to his memory and a disservice to hers.

I wish this debasing trend would stop, and I hope there are jazz enthusiasts out there who are sympatico.
