I very much appreciated how she ended the book, with all the ends tied up and questions answered.

Having read all of Victoria Holt's novels at least three times and read most of her peers, I readily welcome the presence of a new voice that can convey the same amount if not more (definitely more), suspense and supernatural darkness. I devoured An Inquiry of Love and Death in two days and then burned my way through The Haunting of Maddy Clare. Ms. St. James has a real knack for drawing a plucky heroine whose side the reader is immediately on as well as a compelling and flawed love interest (completely adored the detective in An Inquiry of Love and Death), an atmosphere of dawning horror and fully fleshed out secondary characters that are as suspicious and as likeable at St. James needs them to be. I pre ordered this book and was not disappointed. St. James also demonstrates a deep and broad knowledge of culture in England during the aftermath of the Great War. Buy it, buy it, buy it!

Silence of the Dead by Simone St. James
Historical Romance –April 1st, 2014
4 stars

Great Britain is trying to recover from World War I and Kitty Weekes is on the run. Desperate and with nowhere else to go, the determined and resourceful girl poses as a nurse. She soon finds herself on a desolate and isolated location at Portis House. There her mettle is tested as abandoned war heroes recovering from terrible physical and mental damage are put away from society’s gentle eyes. These men seem crazy and sad. Underfunded and without resources she and the other nurses have a difficult time. But plucky Kitty knows life at home would be far worse. And her father shouldn’t be able to find her in such a remote area. But the eerie Portis House seems to be haunted. Plus the mystery of a missing nurse and a patient only known as number sixteen spike her curiosity and land her in trouble.

Romance, mystery and a paranormal house filled with frights make for a page turning read. This book has many twists and turns. The poor, courageous men remind me of the soldiers that come back home now with PTSD. The men and even the nurses are trying to cope the best they can. But in those times PTSD was unknown. The returning soldiers were quickly hushed up and considered utterly shameful. As a battered Kitty finds solace in helping the soldiers she also finds compassion for herself and her own sense of worth. The heroine is out of her mind courageous and the love she finds is worth it all. The plot has many back stories as Kitty explores the house and the secrets behind the men that stay in such a terrible place. When a medical emergency hits the book comes to a climax and not how the reader expects. If you love surprises, World War I and moving characters this book is for you.

Lovers of haunted houses and gothic romances with tragedy will love this book.

I recently listened to the audio version of Simone St. James 'An Inquiry Into Love and Death' and really enjoyed it. Then I got my hands on the audio version of 'The Haunting of Maddy Clare' which I'm currently listening to (and really enjoying).

Both books were very well done, the setting is vivid, the characters are realistic the stories are very nuanced. The pacing is good, the tension is good the mystery is good. I've been very pleased with everything about them (thus far in the case of Maddy Clare).

However 'Silence for the Dead' does not compare to the other two works by this author. Silence feels like the opposite of the other two books in every single aspect of what I liked about them.

The characters are clichéd, the relationships are stereotypical, the love interest and the protagonist have no chemistry, the dialogue is not very good and sometimes it's really awful. The story and writing style are immature. There's a flair of melodrama, some inconsistencies of character and a lack of cohesiveness to the story. I had a hard time believing this was the author's third novel, especially when I thought the other two were very well done.

I will probably pick up the author's next book to see if it's in keeping with the quality of the first two, but I will be borrowing it from my local library.

This is the third novel by Simone St James that I have read and although they are all different in many ways, there is one common thread: you know the man the heroine is going end up with. In this novel Kitty is on the run from something and we don't know what. We get at least two thirds of the way into the novel before we find out what. So, her past is as much mystery as what is going on at Portis House, a "mad house" for PTSD WWI vets. Kitty arrives with faked credentials to Portis House in a remote area of Yorkshire near the sea, and accessable only by a bridge, to claim a post as nurse. She must keep this job since she spent her last penny getting there. But the work is hard, the matron demanding, and living conditions wretched. The poor vets who are housed there are treated poorly as well. Matron is particularly hard on Kitty since she knows immediately that Kitty has forged her recommendation. As Kitty gets to know the men she becomes somewhat sympathetic to all but Creed who gives her the creeps. This is what I call a pluck and gumption novel because that is what keeps her there, causes her to start sorting some strange activities among the men and the ghost, and to team up with patient sixteen. No spoiler alerts. Just know that it all comes to a head quite dramatically during an outbreak of dyptheria and a major storm. If there were a 3.5 rating that's what I would really give it.
