Book Description

April 9, 2003
In 1963, a young nurse is brutally murdered in her Atlanta apartment. Her boyfriend was quickly indicted and convicted for the crime. Solving this case launched the career of, now retired, homicide detective Roger Jennings. But did he get the right man? Twenty-five years later, in 1988, college professor Doreen Patrice Grant is struggling with a dangerous memory hidden deep within her mind - a memory that could cost her life. Dr. Tom Richards, Jr., a wealthy family practice physician, is frantically trying to solve the mystery surrounding the presumed suicide death of his father. Will his obsession with the investigation ultimately drive him to the same fate? Someone is hiding a deadly secret that connects Doreen and Tom. Is it the eccentric mystery writer, T. J. Corprou; the ambitious former judge, Bennett Hargrove; or Hargrove's loyal confidant, cousin and bodyguard, Burke Hargrove? Doreen is beginning to remember the secret that will finally reveal all the answers, if she lives long enough to tell it. Who will silence her memory for good? The clock is ticking . . . and Doreen's time is running out! To Silence Her Memory weaves an intricate tale of love, loyalty, betrayal, deception . . . and murder.

4.0 out of 5 stars First Rate Mystery, August 3, 2010
This review is from: To Silence Her Memory (Paperback)
I enjoy a good mystery with twists and turns. I am a big fan of Walter Mosley and this book lives up to those expectations.

Set in Atlanta, the book shows the charm and grace of a big city with an ugly under belly of murder. It weaves the beauty of its heroine with a disturbing childhoold memory the comes back to haunt her with a vengence.

This is an excellent book with fully developed, interesting, and colorful characters. Every time you think you've figured out the mystery, the author throws you a curve. As I initially stated, I like a good mystery, and this one is first rate.

3.0 out of 5 stars Memories can be deadly, January 14, 2005

This review is from: To Silence Her Memory (Paperback)
The beautiful and intelligent Doreen Grant is living a dream. Upon receiving her law degree, she returned to her alma mater to teach. Teaching at Tillmore College gives her the opportunity to give back to the community and to spend time with her best friend since high school, Dr. Byron Holloway. Doreen is content with all aspects of her life except her love life. Just out of a two - year relationship she isn't looking for love until the handsome and brilliant psychiatrist, Matthew Dennis, comes to Tillmore. Matthew and Doreen hit it off instantly.

Matthew is renown for using hypnosis in his practice. Due to the popularity and curiosity of the technique, Matthew arranges for public demonstrations with the student and faculty body at Tillmore. Curious as to why she loves mystery novels so much, Doreen agrees to be hypnotized to find the answer. What is uncovered during the hypnosis is that Doreen suppressed the childhood memory of witnessing her aunt's brutal murder. The revelation leads Doreen, Byron and Matthew on a journey to uncover the truth to tragic events that occurred twenty-five years earlier. During their investigation, Doreen and her friends learn that an innocent man went to prison for the crime, and a ruthless killer is still on the loose; closer to Doreen than anyone can imagine. The killer will stop at nothing to keep his identity and motives a secret, and that includes murdering again.

TO SILENCE HER MEMORY by Madge D. Owens is a unique story line, it holds the readers' interest despite the fact that some aspects of the novel read slower than others. Doreen, Matthew and Byron are a breath of fresh air in terms of characters. They are young, intelligent, professional African-Americans who have redeeming qualities. The villain is also a unique one with multiple layers of lies, deceit and nastiness. The ending is a bit of a let down only because it so obviously ends in a way that ensures that there will be a sequel. Although, I believe the author could have scaled back fifty or so pages of the novel, it was a joy to read. (RAW Rating: 3.5)
