beautifully crafted instrumentation,

The six parts seven create the kind of music you long to hear as the sun sets far in the western horizon, the kind of music that allows you to relax and take in the tranquil and serene beauty that most of us have let slip by un-noticed. Very clean melodic guitars interweave while rhythms move subtley behind the gentle sounds. Occasional E-bowed, and peadle steel guitars chime in, as does violin and cello, only to make the music that much more majestic. This is the gentle storm that blows cooly over your head, never becoming too loud or jagged, always smooth and very un-pretentious. This music needs to be heard, people need to listen to this music...

Ambient music that is anything but...,

How do you categorize such beautiful music? It is original, yet somehow familiar; memorable, yet it doesn't take over your mind.
I started with "Things Shaped in Passing" after hearing a snip of music on the radio. I couldn't wait to get "Everywhere and Right Here", their newest. Now, "Silence Magnifies Sound". Though these albums cover four years of time, the band's sound is consistently superb, song after song after song. What is it like? Ambient? Post-rock? Jazz? Dunno... It has guitar, percussion, perhaps some keyboard and vibes. No vocals. The instrumentation is flawless, yet often surprising and innovative. The melodies are clean and smooth without being self-conscious and overly dramatic (like crescendos of wild guitar riffs or odd harmony). This stuff is gently eye-opening in the morning, refreshing in the afternoon, and soothing in the evening. It's great for all moods, any time of the day. Listen to the clips. It's for real.

some reviewers only review based on the mood their in. You can not give a cd one star just because you think there are too many postrock bands. Would you give a punk band one star just because there are a lot of punk bands? of course not. i hope no one takes that review seriously.
this album is solid. highly enjoyable. if you enjoy this type of music and would like to expand your collection from the essential: eits/mogwai/album leaf then i would suggest this.

it could be that the music found within these nine tracks reminded me of several others as have been mentioned such as Lanterna, but I also detected a bit of Do May Say Think, Silver Mount Zion, and Explosions in the Sky (albeit a bit more tranquil, in most respects the skill and talent is nonetheless there). Every track is good, n'uff said.

six parts seven are a band you need to take notice of. if you listen to bands such as album leaf, pianomagic, tarentel, tristeza, labradford, lanterna, sigur ros, then do yourself a favor and pick up this bands work. currently at the top of my current playlist is their new cd, to be released on march 22 on suicide squeeze records. instrumental emotion at it's finest. goes well with long drives and soul searching moments.

These type of post-rock progressions/repetitions work best when elaborated in intricate melodic flux, or just broken down as purely as possible. The 6P7 knows and begins to work with these former dynamics quite well, though it only comes together seamlessly briefly, as in the title track. Between underdeveloped tracks and dawdling fade-outs the debut misses the mark of becoming a must have even with some gorgeous material.

Sorry, Samsung,

First thing's first: this is a great album. Don't listen to Mr. Samsung of almighty New York, who seems to believe that as soon as we reach the critical mass of a genre that any and all additional music sucks (and then goes on to mention a list of additional bands. Huh?). And to somehow suggest that your opinion is of greater or lesser value depending on where you live is just stupid and egocentric.
Yes, Mogwai are awesome. In my opinion, they may be the best out there at what they do (especially considering Mr. Beast, which I purchased IN OHIO thank you very much). However, to think that YOUR bands are all that's worthly of hearing...well, that sounds like something I'd expect to hear in New York. Records are meant to be broken, so NEVER limit the world around you solely based on what you've experienced so far. That is the day you stop growing and I have to stop being your friend...

Imagine standing in the middle of a isolated field and all that surrounds you are windmills, run down barns and rolling prairies illuminated by the evening sun. Imagine times as such represented in music. For me, this is it.

im sorry but the glowing testaments here have gotta be from either newcomers to the genre or live outside new york. im just tired of this kind of music now, yeah its beautiful and sweeping and clean but it sounds exactly like EVERYTHING ELSE .. mogwai - the pioneers, along with tristeza, and the album leaf, then all the rip offs explosions in the sky [overrated!!!!], godspeed you black emperor, yume bitsu, shalabi effect, surface of echeon, do make say think, fontanelle, tarentel, mono, sigur ros, tortoise, fontanelle, labradford, silver mt. zion, kammerflimmer kollectief, along with countless other perfectly capable but totally useless and redundant musicians. we can move along now can't we ? do we all have to be stuck on these very limited color schemes? i remember listening to godspeed and mogwai and having people look at me strangely and say under your breath 'just dont slit your wrists while im in the room'. now these same people come up to me with several pin-buttons in their new thrift store blazer and hoodie with their totem hugging headphones with wide eyes and say in a high pitched immature squeal - have you heard the new explosions? it's so beautiful! like the soundtrack to your life!
if youre into the genre , but have no resource for what might exist outside of this ridiculous collective madness [anyone read eric hoffer??] , there is hope! some albums have moved beyond this into new territory. radian-juxtaposition, the double - palm fronds, the dead texan - s/t/, alva noto and ryuichi sakamoto - vrioon, bibio - fi, silo, symptoms, set fire to flames, et sans, esbjorn svensson trio, qua, fennesz just to name a few standouts of the abstrusely disjointed genre once known as 'post-rock'. avoid this s&%$ unless you really have no idea what im talking about. good night. |
