Book Description

July 7, 2011
After bloodthirsty revolutionaries murder her family, Françoise Despres vows to avenge their deaths and fight the violent mob destroying her beloved France by becoming a spy for the counter-revolutionary cause. She knows great success, silently slipping between the shadows to carry secret messages that thwart her foes. But she never expected to come up against Sebastien de Bréze, a daring, clever cavalry officer in the revolutionary army and master spy hunter. Who will win this dangerous game of cat and mouse? When Sebastien discovers the spy he has captured is actually a wily, elusive young woman cloaked in men's garb and shrouded in secrets, he finds himself intrigued and titillated. But the crafty woman slips through his grasp and soon he finds himself chasing her through France. Undaunted, he makes it his mission to recapture Françoise Despres, body and soul.

I loved every moment of this novel! The author has infused just the right amount of historical details balanced with intrigue, adventure, and (of course) romance in this refreshing tale of the beautiful and strong willed counter-revolutionary spy, Françoise Despres, and the handsome Colonel Sebastien de Brézé, an officer in the revolutionary army - and master spy hunter charged with the daunting task of capturing Miss Despres. Françoise is that rare breed of romance heroine who is at once bold, adventurous, intelligent, and willing to die for her beliefs. No simpering wallflower ready to faint at a moment's notice here! Yet, she is drawn to Sebastien in a way she cannot understand - and he to her, as well. What exhilarating tension this creates between the two as they wrestle with the inner turmoil created by their opposing sensibilities regarding the French Revolution while they try to make sense of what it is that exists between them. Each page of this novel sucked me deeper and deeper into their story, and I truly did not want it to end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Citizens and Lovers of France August 9, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Silence in the Mist by Leah Marie Brown is one of those unique and sophisticated novels that tells a gripping tale filled with accurate tidbits of a tumultuous period in France's history. Using all of the tools of a well versed storyteller, author Brown managed to pull me into that long ago era of toppled obelisks and smoking guillotines with her arresting story.

Sprinkled with scholarly insights, sensational homicides, and chilling glimpses into one of the less fortunate aspects of French life (post French Revolution). The heroine, 18th c. Francoise Depres, turns spy to avenge the death of her beloved parents. Along the way she meets a dashing hero in Sebastien de Breze and encounters violence and more obstacles than any one person should have to defeat. Just as the sexual relationship between Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette was initially complicated so has Brown written of a delicate affair between Francoise and Sebastien (no spoilers here as you'll have to read to the end to reach the climax of their union).

Francoise's defiance of conventions and on target demeanor chalk her up to be one of the strong women of La Belle France. She designed her own identity to reach her goal. Vive Les Femmes de la révolution!

This is a complex, layered story filled with impressions of the French that captivated me from beginning to end.

(A good choice for book clubs as there were many avenues to travel and open up discussion with, like French Revolution, spies, the Terror, militants, moral duties of a Republic, the Vendee, guillotine mass killings, patriots, nobles, and of course, romance.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking French Revolution Novel August 3, 2011
Format:Paperback
When Francoise Despres suffers the tragic loss of her beloved family by way of the heartless Revolutionaries, she vows revenge and becomes one of the most clever and courageous spies the counter-revolutionary cause has ever known. Only when she encounters Sebastien de Breze, infamous spy hunter for the Revolutionary Army, and leads him on a dangerous chase through France, does she discover the devastatingly handsome officer has honor and integrity, despite the cause he represents. Based on the real-life spy, Francoise Despres, Leah Marie Brown's masterful pen and love of French history sweeps the reader straight into 18th Century France, where you'll find yourself breathless and unable to turn pages fast enough. Filled with action, heartfilled emotion, terror, and romance, SILENCE IN THE MIST will leave you wanting more from debut author LEAH MARIE BROWN.
