5.0 out of 5 stars Vastly underrated debut album, September 20, 2008
This review is from: Silence Will Kill You (Audio CD)

I took a chance on this album, hearing about them from a family member, but after listening to this album multiple times I cannot understand why they are still under the radar.

With all the hype about bands that sometimes fail to deliver, it is nice to discover a band that are able to knock your socks off, without procaliming that they are the best band in the world... ever.

This album has it all.. football terrace rockers, slow burning melodies and songs that stay in your head all day. I would say they have influences from U2 and a bit of the Police, but they really have their own style.

I havent yet seen these boys live, but have heard that their shows are blistering. I am looking forward to their second album with anticipation.

5.0 out of 5 stars So many good things to say, June 30, 2011
This review is from: Silence Will Kill You (Audio CD)
I loved this whole album. Usually I'm the type of person who just likes one or two songs on an album, so I usually get songs instead of whole albums. There's just so many good songs here though. From the smart "Madness of Crowds" and "Propaganda" to the very personal and touching "The Nightshift." I'm one of those people who really listens to the lyrics and this album was made for people who don't just put music on in the background, but who listen to a song and let it take them places. Recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars a surprisingly great discovery, February 6, 2008
This review is from: Silence Will Kill You (Audio CD)
i never write music reviews, but since there isn't one here, and i happen to enjoy this album i bought a few days ago, here it goes:

this is a really good, emo/post-punk effort. i don't know much about this new UK band and i really just bought the album based on the soviet cover art combined w/ the political sound of the album title.

i found the album to be very approachable, and would highly recommend it to anyone who likes the shake & message of 80s post-punk band 'new model army' or, more recently, the poppier dance sounds of the killers or modest mouse. though there are heavy influences from the past, the songs remain fresh, reminescent of songs you've heard recently and want to sing along to after a few listens.

the lead singer's wide-ranging voice seems able to embrace a plethora of diverse sounds as the album goes from jazzy to dance, from punk to reflection- the political message i was hoping for comes out in 'propaganda' while 'nightshift' is surprisingly bluesy and quiet. the infectious beat of 'settle down' would have me swear it's written/performed by the likes of modest mouse...perhaps the album's only downfall is the lack of depth in some of the lyrics- which is made up for by incredible melody and the lead's voice.

a cursory listen by a friend of mine had her describe it as 'like U2, but better'...some velvet morning's first album shows talent and promise, and is definitely worth a listen.
