Editorial Reviews

Nachtmystium have existed since 2000. Formed by Blake, Judd and Pat Noctis McCormick, the band started off as a primitive 4-tracker black metal band. Over the years, the band has progressed through many lineup changes and the sound has constantly matured, stepping away from the typical black metal thematics and embracing different influences within the sound, while maintaining a raw and harsh edge that's unique to the black metal genre. The incorporation of other influences have helped the band create a sound that is unique to them specifically, and will continue to work as an ever-expanding unit with the ultimate goal to create metal music that pushes boundaries and walks into uncharted territories.

The band are currently preparing for the biggest assault of their career as they unveil their massively anticipated new full-length, 'Silencing Machine'. Recorded at Engine Studios with Sanford Parker (Yob, Pelican), the new album showcases Nachtmstium's most prolific and expansive sounds to date.

I ordered the album on this website because of the nice price and because i like their previous release which was a nice mixture of black metal and psychedelic to which i thought they would follow up with something similar, instead they added back more black metal with a nice raw production. Personally i wish they added more of the psychedelic that drew me to this band but i can honestly say this is the best black metal release that i have heard in a while.

Vaguely comparable to Instinct: Decay, but with a more refined, brooding, atmospheric sound, I have to say, this release was a wholly unseen, pleasant surprise, from start to finish. Let's be honest, Addicts, sucked. It was a god forsaken turn into Joy Division, Bahaus, post punk, goth kid banality, and ultimately was just a boring listen. I don't knock bands for creatively stretching out, that's not where I come from. I like Mastodon and Baroness' new albums, and I believe Black Metal can evolve and change as well, and still be totally true kvlt, but musically rewarding. That's the reason I really like this album. While both morbidly brutal in riffing and drumming, I'll be darned if I wasn't humming choruses like, "Silencing Machine", or singing verses like, "The ancient city FALLS" within two or three listens. This is very Scandanavian inspired black metal, with an attention to melody more in lines of Emperor and Immortal, then say Mayhem. It's powerful but beautiful in a way most other black metal doesn't achieve. Other American bands like Wolves in the Throne Room and Abigail Williams are good in bringing the beauty to Black Metal, but many of their compositions are long winded and full of space. This is tight, concise, teeth shattering metal, throughout. I'm so happy to have one of my favorite black metal bands back in sharp form, now tour Florida please! \m/

Ive never listened to Nachtmystium but Silencing Machine is a great album though Blake Judd's vocals are extremely harsh it still can't take away from the great sound production of the style of music that they play. Great album I will look forward to future releases.
