From the Manufacturer

Product Overview

Book of Memories is an all-new game in the Silent Hill series, with a unique premise and storyline. The story begins with a strange book that is received and inside that book is your entire life story to this point, everything that’s ever happened to you; all of your memories. You discover that by altering what’s written… you can actually change the past. You can write your own ideal history.

A departure for the series, with a focus on co-operative multiplayer action rather than traditional Psychological Horror. Players can work together as they explore several different Otherworlds, solving puzzles and defeating creatures to advance through the Nightmares and uncover the truth behind the Book of Memories. Scare rooms, limited resources, and dark atmosphere all return—but in a gameplay package specifically designed to take advantage of the PlayStation®Vita handheld entertainment system.

Book of Memories is a macabre celebration of the best that Silent Hill has to offer. Players will encounter items and Creatures culled from over a decade of Silent Hill lore, including a special someone who walks softly and carries a gigantic knife.

3.0 out of 5 stars This is a nice dungeon crawling spin off, but... October 16, 2012
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
First of all, I want to point out that it's highly probable that not all SH fans will be happy with this game, due to the kind of game this one turned out to be. I've had a chance to play it early, and it's just an "interesting" way to make a new SH game.

I would best describe this game as SH meets Dungeon Hunter. It's become more of an RPG that's mean to play with other players online. You have access to own custom stats; each time you level up, you will allocate points to a stat such as; str, mind, int, vit, dex, or agi, each with their own unique effect. You get to create your own personalized character (male or female), with a custom look such as a; goth, prep, bookworm, or jock. You also get a variety of outfit colors. The character customization isn't the greatest; but I feel the gameplay, story and soundtrack make up for it all.

-Basically this game consists of a zone. You collect puzzle pieces in that zone , and solve the puzzle for each zone to proceed. And then finally there's a boss thereafter 3 zones. You're also given an optional mission by a creature who will reward you if you complete his assigned task. You also have access to a shop (once you find it, it's going to be somewhere within each Zone.), you can buy Artifacts which can increase your stats, weapons, med kits, etc.

-In this game, your weapon will wear out, so unless you have tool kits to repair them, they will break if in the red. Inventory size can be increased by purchasing backpack upgrades from the shop.

-There's enemies which are in Blood or Light category (also Steel). Blood and Light are different from one another, so if you see them killing each other, that's normal. However collecting blood of one will grant access to either Blood or Light special karma abilities. Steel ones do not drop anything, they're just enhanced monsters.

I've come to actually like this game very much, since I am fond of RPG's, others may thing that this is a game that could easily be made for 99 cents on the iOS app store.

My main reason for trying out this new game was because of this new multiplayer/online. I've tried this a couple times and this is the big downfall in my rating; there will be occasionally time when the game glitches. Someone in you group may or may not have all puzzle pieces , while others have all of them, causing you not to finish a Zone, and you will be forced to just quit. It's got other online glitches (and some offline) as well. It's pretty cool how they implement voice chat as well, making it easier to communicate with your teammates. You have the option to mute them if you prefer not to.

The music is pretty neat, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn is back with some pretty great songs. The story is way different from your typical SH game.

In conclusion; this is a SH game that has more of a hack & slash dungeon RPG feel to it, than your regular SH. So at this point, it's up to you if you like it or not. It's a great game in my opinion, I just hope they work on fixing the glitches which cause you to just not be able to complete a Zone after so much work.

Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
I really wanted to like this game and gave it a chance. But there comes a point in the game where the gameplay elements breakdown and exposes some deep flaws in the stat balancing system and level design structuring.

The basic gameplay map that you follow in Silent Hill is you enter a zone, receive a mission (optional) and continue on your merry way to the end of the level. The one requirement is that you have to complete "challenges" in specific rooms to collect puzzle pieces to solve at the end of each zone. After every three zones, you face a boss. There are 21 storyline zones in total. Each set of three zones follows a narrative for a different character that has meaning to the protagonist. The first 21 zones are well developed and balance the stat system and enemy difficulty. However, after zone 21, that's when things begin to break down.

There comes a certain point in the game where you find yourself perplexed and frustrated, asking yourself important questions like, "Why is there only one save room?" "Why are there only 4 tool repair kits allowed in your fully upgraded pack?" and "Why does the scale of the enemy difficulty scale nonsensically?" I've asked myself these questions many many times as I've watched my character die multiple times by 1 hit-insta kills, an increasingly common feature of later zones.

I'm currently on zone 50 with a level of 30 or so. Initially, I distributed most of my stats evenly, until recently where I have been boosting only strength and vitality in a futile attempt to counteract 1 hit instant kills from overpowered enemies. After doing the boosting for some time, I've come to the conclusion that it just doesn't really matter where you place your stats. For example, beyond a certain zone the game gets tough. Not just tough, but unforgiving. You will have zones where you have to collect 7 puzzle pieces. The more puzzle pieces, the longer the levels. A useful rule of thumb is to think about the size of the level like the area of a square. Five puzzle pieces is the smallest amount you will have to collect in a level, while 7 is the max. Five puzzle pieces is like the area of a 5x5 square, so you can appreciate just what I mean when you hit a 7 puzzle piece level, yup a 7x7 square. The 7 puzzle piece levels become frequent in later zones, increasing the levels of cortisol in the bloodstream to dangerous levels. Despite the massive increase in level size, you're still only granted 1 save room and 1 shop room, sometimes appearing light-years away from the start. This means you'll have to be prepared to *constantly* back track. Or, you'll have to run from room to room while collecting keys and avoiding enemies to purchase very scarce weapon repairs and health kits. If you're lucky to have a save room early on, you'll want to frequently run back to save. If you don't get a chance to save and die (which is super easy), it's back to the start with you.

The major problem isn't the size of the level, but the nonsensical scaling of difficulty as you continue deeper into the zones. You will go from one zone, being able to survive a direct hit from a pyramid head to every zone thereafter being instantly killed by a direct hit, despite the pacing of level ups. It just doesn't make sense. This sort of scheme makes it exceptionally difficult and tiresome to progress. Moreover, it forces you to change tactics just to stand a chance. It's best to use long range weapons against powerful enemies, and only long range weapons. On less powerful enemies, you simply can use pyramid head's sword to dice through enemies quickly. This strategy is forced on the player in order to minimize deaths. It squashes variety and creative use of weapons, which is a shame since there are quite a number of weapons. Literally, you might as well just have your pack filled with Great Swords and Lazer Guns. That's all you'll need to get through this game. And unfortunately, that's all you'll ever want to use.

3.0 out of 5 stars Silent Hill on the Vita!!! oh..... dungeon crawler? January 29, 2013

Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
Well what can I say about this title. I'm a fan of the Silent Hill series and have been waiting for this title since it's delay. I even preordered it! When you start the game you are welcomed with an epic menu screen thanks to the always amazing vocal work of Mary Elizabeth McGlynn. But that's where the greatness stops. If you're a fan of dungeon crawling games, or looting, you may like this. I was a little disappointed, I was expecting something like Silent Hill Origins. If you're a fan of the series, you may not like it at all. It does have four player online multiplayer, if that's a plus?

Am I the only one?
I agree. People need to release the changes are to fit the format. Its like Resistance: Retribution and Killzone: Liberation on the PSP. They were great games that play to the strength of a handheld.

Release Date Changed Again? Or Still the 16th?
I know it was the 31st of October awhile back, probably around the time the IGN article was released. Recent sources are claiming that the release date will be the 16th, so I trust that more than an older article.

What do you think of the demo?
I have to admit, I was totally dismissing this game because of the direction they went with it. I still don't feel like it should have been a "Silent Hill" game. But the demo was actually pretty addicting. It's really a classic dungeon crawler with RPG elements. Lots of stat... Read more

Is this game really Silent Hilll because....
Because naming this game "Silent Hill" guarantees sales. Fanboys will buy it because of the name. Other companies have been using this marketing strategy for a long time. It is not new. Resident Evil is not Resident Evil. Final Fantasy is not Final Fantasy. You know what I mean. There's... Read more
