Editorial Reviews

Silent Hill: Downpour is the eighth installment in the famous "Silent Hill" video game series published by Konami Digital Entertainment. The game follows Murphy Pendleton, a prisoner who is stranded in the tow of Silent Hill after his transport vehicle crashed. Daniel Licht (the composer famous for his work on the "Dexter" series) composed the thrilling and suspenseful score for the game. Jonathan Davis of Korn performs the end credit song for the game.

Akira Yamaoka has been the voice of Silent Hill for nearly a decade. I've constantly said that his music for the game series is some of the best horror scoring ever composed. I rarely get scared by horror films, but when I would play Silent Hill it was the closest to true terror I've ever experienced. I owe that all to Akira Yamaoka. When Konami announced a new Silent Hill game was coming it was quickly revealed that Akira passed on the project. He wanted to venture onto different projects, and who could blame him? It was time for a new voice to takeover. Since the makers of this installment were such huge fans of Dexter the TV series they pursued composer Daniel Licht, and Daniel Licht they got. So, does Daniel meet my super high expectations?

Yes. I think the score to Silent Hill: Downpour is a fantastic addition to the soundscape of this universe. Licht did a great job of retaining the feel without making a carbon copy. This is a Daniel Licht score and not a Daniel Licht impersonating Akira Yamaoka score. I don't think anyone wanted that, especially Daniel. What follows is a score that isn't as ambient heavy and more based on simple melodies. Licht does use warped and strange sounds that blend into the soundscape. So the score almost becomes an exercise in sound design. We definitely know we're in Silent Hill, and the music provides the tension needed. Overall it's a fantastic entry that has a unique new sound that Silent Hill fans should definitely embrace. If the score has any faults it's that the terror factor that was there in Akira's music is toned down. Since Akira would go crazy with the non-structured ambience it would literally drive the listener insane. It was an aggressive approach that worked on me and Licht doesn't take as much of an aggressive approach.

Not much to say that hasn't been shared already, except that I completely agree that Daniel Licht really did the score justice. Mary Elizabeth McGleen's contributions, though sparse, are welcome and always add a positive note to the Silent Hill franchise. One thing that was not mentioned in other reviews is the first track, "Silent Hill" which Jonathan Davis, frontman for the rock band Korn, also contributed a real gem. The credits state that Davis composed and performed all of the duties on this track. Not everybody is going to love it, but any Korn fan will recognize Jon's croon and creepy whispers and know that this story delves into emotions not for the faint of heart. Rounded out by samples from the trailer of screaming children, you know right away it's going to hit a nerve. That's Jon's unrestrained signature: drilling a hole in your emotions and putting something in that's uncomfortable but draws you in deeper all the same. The chanting refrain goes a little long, but stops before it can become monotonous. The whole soundtrack is a real gem, but I do hope the full score will be released in the future.

This is an excellent and highly atmospheric soundtrack. It's a shame that this soundtrack is the only good place to hear the music that Mr. Licht composed, since it is almost inaudibly quiet in the game itself...

Great soundtrack, but some of the songs are a bit too quiet; you'll have to turn your ipod up pretty loud if you want to hear all the instruments. They're great to listen to in the rain or during a bike ride. Perfect if you were a big fan of Downpour like I am.

Korn - Downpour (Main Theme)
I believe it's track one, unless there's some kind of unreleased song Daniel Licht did with jonathan davis (the lead singer of korn)

Stores?
Doubtful, the only SH soundtrack that got an in stores release was 3, and it was VERY limited.
It may come with the pre-order versions of the game, however, which all but Origins did.
