2.0 out of 5 stars Needed More Development Time December 27, 2011

The Silent Hunter franchise has long established itself as the premier name in the realm of submarine simulations. Previous entries, such as Silent Hunter III set new standards in terms of realism, attention to detail, accuracy and immersion. The standard became higher with its sequel, Silent Hunter 4 and with the release of 5, the bar was set even higher. Unfortunately, Silent Hunter 5 fails to do its predecessors justice. The magnitude of bugs, bizarre AI and the removal of many basic commands and features mar this game.

Graphics: The game is visually stunning, as is each entry in the franchise to respective gaming standards. The attention to detail is nothing short of impressive. Each ship has animated crews that move about during play. In cold weather, one can see ice formations on the gunwhales of the ships. While this is all impressive, there are some major issues inside the submarines, themselves. Most of the gauges do not function and are only polygon decals. In a simulator, where accuracy and function are important, this is frustrating. Likewise, the graphics do not appear to take advantage of many of the specialized accelerators that most major graphics cards can handle. As a result, the game's framerate is somewhat low, even on the most powerful of machines.

Sound: Most of the core sound effects are the exact same files from Silent Hunter III and 4. While hardly innovative, players of previous installments easily settle in to the sound of the game. Since sound is important in a submarine simulator, this ease of transition is welcome. The voiceover for the crew is somewhat better, although the faux accent of the German crewmembers is still a bit awkward.

Gameplay and Stability: This is where the game falls flat on its face.

Overall, in my opinion, this is a great game. Before buying it myself, I had done some research on it as you are now. Many people have reported glitches that severely disrupt the game play. I, however, have not experienced these glitches. The absolute worst thing about this game is a minor crashing issue. Note, however, it is quite minor. It will happen to me once every three days or so. With an auto save every 30 minutes, it isn't a major problem. If you're playing this on a laptop, as I am, there's something you may want to note: don't close your laptop's lid! If you do, your game will close.

General likes:
-Game play overall is quite entertaining. Though it may technically be repetitive in some cases, I personally don't notice it greatly.
-Other than a rare crash, I haven't encountered any glitches.
-Realism settings are fully adjustable: you can play with near perfect realism or turn things down a bit for a first run-through.
-The promotion system with your crew is completely up to you: you get points known as promotion points to spend on various upgrades to your crew, enhancing your submarine or the crew's efficiency at sea.

General dislikes:
-Some missions can be tedious and stressful: A mission might be to "sink an enemy aircraft carrier". You are like, "okay", and head over to the mission site. You search and search and search, but never find any aircraft carrier. I'm sure one is there, but is just hard to find.
-Some aircraft can be annoying. They just fly around yelling out your position. I would submerge to avoid detection, but my submarine's batteries won't last long enough. They never seem to attract any destroyers to me, but they just keep setting the time compression back to 1.

2.0 out of 5 stars Well, it sucks alright August 12, 2013

I have avoided buying this game up until now (it was deeply discounted) and I should have continued avoiding buying it. What a shame, i LOVED the silent hunter series up until this one.

First of all, you are required to sign up for ubisoft's "Upay" game network (which really just boils down to a chance to shove ads in your face). Thankfully, since this is a download version, you wont be stuck with their suc-u-rom shennanigans, but you will be forced to keep your save games on their servers for some unknown reason. Oh yea, i know the reason, Ubisoft sucks.

Next, they've tried to make the game more mouse-centered, which would be fine except they've botched the games mouse inputs, there is a distinct lag between inputs & results... even on a machine that has more than double the games system requirements.

Next, they've forced you to walk around the sub & click on stuff in order to get to the functions of the ship. Which would've been a good idea if they hadn't botched that up so horribly as well.

If only they would've just done a graphics improvement to SH4 & shoved that out the door... it would've been 10X the game that this is.

My advice is keep on waiting until its even cheaper than $10... or until someone (hopefully not ubisoft) releases SH6.

--edit-- Interesting side note... it seems that updating games is not something that upay does. Also odd that the game itself doesnt check for updates (odd since it saves your games on the internet, but cant check its own version number?) Also odd that the download & buy version doesnt include a patch that is now over 3 years old.

Anyway, long story short, this download gives you version 1.05.. in order to update it to 1.2 (which you WILL want to do) you'll have to go to C:\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 5\Support\GameUpdater\ and run GU.exe

If i were a game maker, i'd have done it differently, but apparently thats the way ubi rolls.
