My daughter gets a good chuckle from this book and quickly grasped the concept of how silent letters impact the pronunciation and spelling of a word. As an added bonus, the teacher in the book tells the children it's hard to learn about silent letters and mistakes are to be expected. It is very encouraging. This book should be a staple in the elementary school classroom.

A Fun Way to Teach Silent Letters,
By Lynn Ellingwood "The ESOL Teacher" (Webster, NY United States) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Silent Letters Loud and Clear (Hardcover)
A fun book about teaching silent letters. The kids in Mr. Wright's class are at it again. They get tired of silent letters and write to the local newspaper decrying their use. The paper prints the letter minus silent letters and a firestorm develops. People have trouble reading the letter, and people begin complaining about the quality of the school and Mr. Wright's teaching ability. It all turns out alright in the end.

Shared this recently with 2nd grade supported readers. One little man said," Wow, I didn't know there were that many silent letters!" Since the silent letters show up as outlines , easy for kids to get a greater sense of how many of these appear in our language.

After Mr. Wright's class complains that "silent letters are a pain," and sends a letter to the newspaper suggesting that "silent letters should be banned," the silent letters stage a walkout! Kids don't have to know they're learning something -- this book is just fun!

Robin Pulver is amazing! I love her series of Punctuation Takes a Vacation, Nouns and Verbs Have a Field Trip and now Silent Letters Loud and Clear. My students love the humorous pictures and really grasp the grammar and punctuation concepts which she describes. Great for opening units and intriguing interests, as well as providing examples throughout the learning lessons!
