Book Description

September 9, 2001
Many people who have suffered miscarriage, stillbirth, or neonatal death have been made to feel they shouldn't talk about it. As a result, their grief has often been compounded by guilt, shame, and sometimes anger. Now, with great sensitivity, Adrienne Ryan, who has herself suffered multiple miscarriages, explains why this grief is different than any other. This collection of more than fifty real-life stories—written by mothers as well as fathers and grandparents—give voice to that grief in all its emotional and psychic complexity. A Silent Love will offer support and hope to those who have lost a child, and will be an invaluable guide for friends and family.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Silent Tragedy, September 18, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: A Silent Love: Personal Stories of Coming to Terms with Miscarriage (Paperback)
There are too few books written about this tragedy and yet it happens to so many of us. What is so great about A Silent Love is that in enables each of us to discover that we are not alone, whatever our own personal experience of loss.
What is also important is that the author has recognised the grief of other family members, including the fathers who are too often forgotten.
This book is a must for everyone because there is so much we can all learn from it. Whether you have suffered the loss of a child or not, you will know someone who has and reading A Silent Love will help you to support them.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Silent Love, May 11, 2008

A Silent Love written by Adrienne Ryan is a book I primarily bought because I had met her during an election campaign via the internet where she was working in the Head Office and I was out in the sticks selling the candidate. I also decided that she would be a great guest speaker at a function and invited her accordingly and then realised when she sent me her bio that she had written a book so what better than to read it.

What I found was book that should be mandatory reading globally as it brings out what women suffer during miscarriage and the range of psychological problems from depression to rage due to what has happened to them.
Adrienne rightly points out that women seem to be the only focus that the medical field concentrate on when they should also be assisting the males as well as thery go through a range of emotions as well. This was forcibly brought home to me when her husband Peter duly noted that all the sympathy cards with flowers attached were to Adrienne and his name did not appear on any of them. As Peter said "They were my babies too".

The book relates well to one and all as it is written in a style that doesn't lose the reader to medical jargon which would often be the case on this subject. It also shows up some glaring inefficiences in the medical system particularly in the Catholic system which is disturbing but totally expected.

I highly recommend this book for women who have had this dreadful predicament happen to them and strongly suggest that men also read the book so that they can understand what there wives/partners are going through.

I bought a copy of "A Silent Love: Personal Stories of Coming to Terms with Miscarriage" for my sister who has suffered this unfortunate experience many times. This book provides exactly what I was looking for in trying to find reading material to ease her pain and loss. I browsed the stories and found the voices of others who share her sadness. Miscarriage doesn't just affect the mother of a lost child, stories of spouses and other significant others are included as they should be. This book is a great comfort to us all and I would highly recommend it to anyone who has experienced miscarriage and/or wants to understand and help those who have.
