Book Description

October 14, 2008

Charmaine Ryan knows only poverty and pain growing up. In the wake of a horrifying tragedy, she seeks a new life, and fate leads her into the private world of the wealthy Duvoisin clan. At first, it seems as if nothing terrible could touch this seemingly charmed family. But an ill wind blows through the halls and chambers of the Duvoisins' sprawling island retreat, carrying betrayal, deceit, and ominous peril.

Quickly, Charmaine is caught up in the secrets and mystique swirling around the enigmatic family. At the center are shipping tycoon Frederic Duvoisin and his youthful wife, Colette. And there is Paul Duvoisin, a dashing seducer and Frederic's bastard son, who stirs a dangerous fascination in the two women; the scheming Agatha Ward, who will not rest until she's taken Colette's place in Frederic's heart as well as in his bed; and exiled son, John, who reenters the family fold, stoking the turmoil as he unveils truths best kept hidden. Ultimately, Charmaine chooses to stand with Colette against formidable enemies, but has she made the right decision?

A sweeping, remarkable blend of adventure, romance, intrigue, and suspense, A Silent Ocean Away heralds the arrival of a glorious new voice on the historical fiction scene.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Pretty young Charmaine Ryan grew up poor and miserable in pre-Civil War Richmond, so when she is hired as a companion to a wealthy woman, she’s thrilled—even more so when she’s recommended as a governess for the young heirs to the Duvoisin sugarcane fortune. Charmaine moves to the Duvoisins’ main house in the Caribbean and quickly learns that wealth is no guard against misery. Charmaine is a silent witness to the machinations of the Duvoisins. Frederic, the head of the family and paralyzed from a stroke, names his illegitimate son heir to the family fortune; nurses his ailing wife, who is half his age; outmaneuvers his conniving sister-in-law, who is only waiting for her chance to be his wife; and keeps the plantation from failing. When Frederic’s legitimate son, a rake and a roustabout, returns from Virginia, it’s all the family can do to hold themselves together. Intrigue thrives and breeds obsession in the first in Deva’s planned trilogy dramatizing the rise and fall of antebellum royalty. --Hilary Hatton

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Historical Fiction - leaves you wanting more!, November 21, 2008

Feel the need to escape to a tropical paradise about right now? A Silent Ocean Away did just that for me! This novel tells the story of Charmaine, a young girl who is hoping to leave her troubled past behind for a promising future. The couple she is working for in Richmond, VA encourages her to apply for the job of governess for the Duvoisin family. She gets the job, and moves to a tropical paradise, Charmantes, which is owned by the Duvoisins. She quickly becomes close to Colette, the children's mother, and learns that being wealthy doesn't necessarily guarantee you freedom. She also realizes that there are many secrets residing in her new home.

This is a lovely historical romantic novel, and I can't wait until the next installment comes out! Will Charmaine remain enamored with Paul, or will she fall for John. Why did John return to the island? What really happened between John and his father?

4.0 out of 5 stars (3.5) A very pleasant, easy read, August 4, 2009

This review is from: A Silent Ocean Away: Colette's Dominion (Paperback)
Set in the 1830's, Charmaine Ryan takes employment as a governess to the three youngest children of Frederic Duvoisin on his private Island in the West Indies. Charmaine bonds quickly with the children, as well as their mother Collette, Frederic's second and much younger wife. The innocent Charmaine feels something entirely different for Frederic's illegitimate son Paul, who has quite a reputation as a ladies man but does he truly care for her or is she just another conquest? Of course the Duvoisin family has plenty of deep dark secrets - what was the cause of the argument between Frederic and his legitimate son John that lead to Frederic's stroke? What is the cause of the enmity between the two elder sons? Why does John seem hell-bent on stymieing the goods shipments to the Island? Is there something sinister at work behind Collette's weakening health?

Inquiring minds want to know, but I am not telling - read it for yourself. Despite a bit of a rocky start that might be improved with some serious editing (I understand that the book was originally self-published), Charmaine's story was compelling enough to keep me turning the pages wanting to know what was going to happen next. This is the first in a trilogy; the next in the series is Decision and Destiny: Colette's Legacy which I just started. The last book, Forever Waiting: Colette's Appeal, is due out in November '09. These books might be a bit too slow paced for some readers as the author(s) cover a great deal of the day-to-day activities of the family along with Charmaine's interaction with the children, but I enjoyed it a great deal, especially the Island setting. 3.5/5 stars rounded up to 4.

An intriguing story that moves along at a nice clip, with very memorable characters. The historical and geographic settings are fascinating and add to the story. A "must read" not only for romance readers, but for anyone interested in historical fiction.
