4.0 out of 5 stars Classy mood music March 18, 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I write a week after having witnessed Marian McPartland perform with a group of string players called the Chicago Sinfonietta. It was interesting to hear Marian play arrangements of Gershwin, Porter and Ellington in this setting, but she had to sacrifice some of her tone -- her great strength as a pianist -- to accommodate the setting.
This is less of a problem on "Silent Pool," which has the strength of featuring only Marian's compositions. As a result the arrangements meet Marian's music rather than the other way around. While it's nice to have her compositions in one place, the tempos get a bit sleepy at times. That said, Marian's playing is excellent throughout, especially on "For Dizzy" and "Twilight World," her best known composition. So as a change of pace, it's pleasant enough and one of the more successful "jazz player meets symphonic music" dates, but it's not the disk I would select to demonstrate Marian's great strengths: her tone and sense of harmony. Choose "Live at Maybeck" or "Reprise: Marian McPartland's Hickory House Trio" if you want to hear Marian at her best as a mainstream jazz pianist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Silk January 14, 2000
Format:Audio CD
As a listener of Piano Jazz, I am always delighted to hear the guests Marian brings to the audience. It is wonderful to hear solos and duets with her guests. This CD combines Marian's classic piano with an orchestra of strings. Others have used "lush" in the titles of songs and albums but this CD is "lush" personified. If beginning a collection of piano music begin with this and use it as a measurement for all others.

I enjoyed the mood that McPartland created with this album. Along with her NPR program she has made great contributions to the genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful June 3, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Been writing like a man possessed here on Amazon (many posts regarding a certain Metheny ECM recording) . All the while , i've been listening to this gorgeous date from Ms. McPartland . Years ago , i used to go for REALLY long walks (in a beautiful part of Tampa , Fl) . I'd listen to Marian's "piano jazz" radio program . I was always knocked out by what i heard from Ms. McPartland and her quests .
When deciding where to start a clutch of Marian's best recordings , i consulted the bones (Penguin Guide To Jazz) books .
This one , with Andy Simpkins (an acoustic bass) and Harold Jones (drums) , leapt out at me . It's got magnificent string arrangements by pianist Alan Broadbent and gets a ***(*) out of **** from the guide in question . You can't and (more importantly) won't go wrong with this acquisition .
Take our word for it .
Many listens in .
Spectacular , lush and deep as the waters depicted on the disc's cover .

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime and outstanding February 6, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Marian McPartland was a tremendously talented pianist. A genius who just recently left us. The title track on the CD is my favorite, but listen to all of it while working from home. Highly recommended if you appreciate piano.
