Hunger for Consciousness,
By
This review is from: The Silent Questions: A Spiritual Odyssey (Hardcover)
Wow! What a ride. I've read this book three times now...and every time it takes me a little deeper, a little farther along the path of TRUE Self discovery. No doubt about it. This is one of the most original, inspiring and helpful books I've read in a long, long time. I've come to recognize through Marman's book that it is the Silent Questions that have always propelled me forward.....Who am I....really? What is my TRUE purpose? Questions I ask myself and life answers over and over again through the gift of consciousness. The stories, poems and insights that Marman shares have become a launching pad for these rich and rewarding personal spiritual experiences. But if you were to ask me what the big payoff has been, I would say it has deepened my hunger for consciousness...what more could I ask?

The Spirit of a Seeker,
By
This review is from: The Silent Questions: A Spiritual Odyssey (Hardcover)
Who am I? Why am I here? What is the meaning of life? These questions are at the root of the author's life-long and ongoing quest for understanding. Like the layers of an onion, as each "truth" is discovered, another more subtle layer of reality presents itself and, like a shaken kaleidoscope, new and exciting patterns and dimensions are revealed.
Although many of Doug's extraordinary experiences stretch beyond the consensual reality most of us were raised in, his book rings with honesty and integrity. Doug was strongly influence by Eckankar, even if he broke with the movement, and his explorations spiral back through its philosophy. The book is written as a memoir, pulling together articles, diary entries, thoughts and recollections spanning 40 years. The writing is fluid, the stories interesting and the poems evocative, however the book could probably benefit from being edited down a bit. Still this is a small quibble over what is an original and illuminating book about the path of a true seeker and his lifelong dedication to understanding how the universe works. It was not an easy path, requiring real commitment; but the rewards were equally real and at times astonishing. So if your spirit of adventure and cosmic curiosity have been on the wane, this may be just the book to jolt them back to life.
