5.0 out of 5 stars Make it a Molly Millennium .....

Unlike the last two reviewers, who seem to be living in a 1982 time-warp, I am a Molly Hatchet fan of 20 years, seen 'em, played the music and rate this album as their best yet. 1.0 out of 5 stars this album is only for hatchet come lately fans!
I feel that this is a poor attempt by the band to try to catch its former fame. This album lacks most of the sounds that were the true definers of the southern rock movement. Southern rock is defined by high speed boogie riffs with slizlin hybrd rock/boogie guittar licks. Listen to the old skynard albums and the old hatchet albums and you can hear the difference. I...

........ and buy this record! Unlike the last two reviewers, who seem to be living in a 1982 time-warp, I am a Molly Hatchet fan of 20 years, seen 'em, played the music and rate this album as their best yet. Like many healthy bands the music (and, in this case, line-up) has evolved and matured - retaining Southern Roots at it's heart whilst also developing a gutsy but polished rock sound for the 21st Century. I also say this acknowledging full well the important part every past band member has played in the Molly Hatchet story. If you have an open mind and are in the least bit interested in 'honest to goodness Rock n' Roll' give this album a try. Would you trust 'reviewers' who try to define Southern Rock in 11 words or admit to burying their head in a 1985 sandpit? Believe me - the album is fresh and awesome. Keep on Rockin' Molly ! I'm with you guys!

I listened to these guys play at our local motor speedway after an evening of figure-8 racing in the summer of '99. I didn't know these guys weren't the original Molly Hatchet and based upon the applause, neither did the hundreds of fans around the race track. THESE GUYS LOOK LIKE MOLLY HATCHET, SOUND LIKE MOLLY HATCHET, ARE MOLLY HATCHET! I've been a fan since 1978's debut album. Twenty years past, "Silent Reign Of Heroes", and I'm still a fan. These guys are good, real good. Molly Hatchet is alive & KICKIN'!

5.0 out of 5 stars YEE-HAW! The South has risen again., July 11, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Silent Reign of Heroes (Audio CD)
Y'all git down one time cos Molly Hatchet are back with a new CD which really kicks some ass. Reaching back to their Jacksonville roots, these good (old?) boys have come up with one of the finest Southern boogie albums in years. Phil McCormack has shown himself to be a more than capable replacement, and indeed soundalike, for the departed founding vocalist Danny Joe Brown, and the rest of the band have obviously gelled to produce a fine album which combines excellent slide, ryhthm and lead guitar attacks, melodious keyboards and kick-butt bass and drum backing. With a mixture of rockin' tunes, barroom boogie and two epic cuts (the title track and "Saddle Tramp"), these guys are really giving Skynyrd a run for their money and reviving the heady days of the 70s/80s when bands such as Hatchet, Skynyrd, Blackfoot and 38 Special slugged it out for supremacy. If you like your music loud, your slide guitar searing and your ryhthms pounding, buy this - you won't be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars ALL HAIL HATCHET !! HARD ROCK LIVES - SOUTHERN STYLE., April 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Silent Reign of Heroes (Audio CD)
Another killer CD from the "phoenix" like new version of Molly Hatchet. A mixture of hard rock, boogie and epics, this album is even better than it's GREAT predecessor "Devils Canyon" and that is no small feat. What "Hatchet" have done is to move from a southern boogie rock band to a Hard Rock band with a Southern Boogie flavor. That may sound like a subtle difference, but just one listen to either of the last 2 albums and you'll be slammed with some great HARD ROCK!! The key to this rejuvenated outfit is clearly Bobby Ingram. Assuming the role of band leader, Ingram not only plays lead guitar, but writes most of the tracks - and that is the best thing about this new version of Hatchet - the songs are GREAT. It's usually a very bad sign if none of the members of a group are original members. It usually signals sellout for $$$$, but NOT in this case. I'm sure true blue fans will disagree with me. but this gang is BETTER that the original. Even though Ingram didn't join Hatchet until the 1989 "Lightning Strikes Twice" album he has been close to the fold since the group's inception. Original singer Danny Joe Brown sang in Ingrams local band in Florida before joining Hatchet and when Brown left after the "Flirtin' with Disaster" album to form his own "Danny Joe Brown Band" - Ingram was his guitar player. So he truly does have a legitimate tradition to carry on this band's legacy. ALL HAIL HATCHET!!!!

Some people hate the fact that Phil McCormack sounds like Danny Joe Brown...probably the same ones who hate the fact that Journey's Steve Augeri sounds like Steve Perry and Skynyrd's Johnny Van Zandt sounds like Ronnie Van Zandt. C'est la vie. "Silent Reign Of Heroes" has the same balance between hard-driving rockers and power ballads found in the best of Hatchet's DJB catalog. The 8 minute title track may be another "Free Bird-slash-Green Grass & High Tides" retread, but so WHAT? The band is doing its best to create new material and they work their backsides off all over the world, bringing happiness to fans of the old songs. Don't like it? Don't listen to it...it's that simple. For everyone else, you're in for a treat.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great record, August 30, 2011

When the "new" Hatchet emerged I was quite skeptical. Was not sure if Molly of the latter day Hatchets had the stuff. Mos def was not gonna gamble import prices on them. Lately however my interest peaked and I pick up a used copy of TSROH. Its is a great record. 9 of the ten tracks blaze. Sort of a Judas Priest meets Lynyrd Skynrd type sound. Good singing good playing. The only clunker is the semi aciustic remake of Fall Of The Peace Makers. The big guitar rave up at the end with an almost Moody Blues type of take on things. Cost this effort a star 4 instead of 5. Otherwise a great effort.

5.0 out of 5 stars Uplifting Southern Rock-N-Roll, November 6, 2009

A rose by any other name....

I'll start with this, Molly Hatchet continues to play some of the best Southern Rock in the world regardless of their lead vocalist. I admit it, I was a Danny Joe Brown diehard and held out for quite a while in accepting Phil McCormack as their lead singer. Finally I bought Kindom of XII and gave it a spin, slowly it began to grow on me. Then I saw Hatchet in concert and was blown away by their live performance. Now I have embraced the new Hatchet. I still love the DJB years and albums, but I also love and appreciate Phil, Bobby and the rest of the current line up.

I bought Silent Reign of Heroes primarily for 2 songs; Dead and Gone (The Redneck Song) and Miss Saturday Night, but the rest of the songs have quickly become favorites. Molly Hatchet continues the tradition of Southern Rock with the same style as in the DJB era. They have grown and evolved and still sound great. I strongly recommend this album to any fan of Southern Rock and especially DJB Hatchet fans.
